The international chess Federation banned trans women from playing women's chess. CHESS. It's not about fairness. The fairness argument is intended to radicalize people into more violent forms of transphobia.

That rock skipping, yes tossing stones across a pond or river, is a gender segregated sport, should tell you something about how gendered sports are not about fairness of physical ability, and is instead about the male ego

The correct line on the Reform concentration camps story is "Reform will spout any nonsense to distract voters from the £5 million donation to Farage, the JCB corruption story and the many other stories showing Reform only cares about their rich donors, not about ordinary people."

if you step in a turd, you don't scrape it off the floor, put it into a box, and offer it around your friends "look what i stepped in, take a whiff" but that's pretty much what people do when they're linking to the telegraph

I’ve posted it before, but it feels evergreen The two hardest problems in Computer Science are 1. Human communication 2. Getting people in tech to believe that human communication is important

I think we need an inverse thread where we talk about things that normal intelligent people universally agree upon that are for some reason hot takes within your profession

a sombre morning for british columnists as they move their "The electorate has spoken, we must listen" articles to the recycling bin and upload their "the greens victory shows just how far the west has fallen" articles instead

I got a great question on my Ramadan thread: do Muslims also need to avoid consumption by proxy in videogames? Does consuming in-game food or drink break the fast? Basically: does your character have to go fast? The answer is no, unless you happen to be playing Sonic the Hedgehog.

for what it's worth, i've found the key to being good at something, beyond the usual time money and access to equipment, is simply enjoying being bad at something if you can't enjoy sucking at a thing, you'll never spend time on it

inspired by CLAUDE.md, I’ve started putting markdown files named after coworkers into work code repos so I can remind them to stop doing shit to the codebase that annoys me for some reason they’re all mad at me now, which means ill be adding commands to JEREMY.md for an attitude adjustment

Note how these awful people are getting exactly the exclusions of children that they demanded and *that still isn’t enough for them*: they demand everyone be delighted about it and kiss their arses for being brilliant.

If we don’t signal our virtue every now and again - then so many believe they are utterly alone - “virtue signalling” is not there to say “aren’t I good” but “there are more of us than you might imagine” and “fuck you for demanding that only the brutal and the bullies may speak”

it's kinda weird that all the software i am expected to use for work are all written by distributed teams, go, python, postgres, linux, chrome, k8s etc and despite being told "the best teams work in an office together" i don't know of any software i use that's actually written that way

watching the UKs green party elect an actual unafraid leftist into leadership and see party membership double in under a month is once again endless proof that if you stand up for leftist causes and treat the electorate like adults, you’ll win people over easily

i work on llms and they are my preferred subject in general and i find their invasion of all discourse annoying. i would cheerfully retvrn to an era when normal people had never heard of ai, except that this would also mean budgets were lower and i would not be employed dealing with them

Fun fact: There is not a single District in the UK with below 60% support for increased renewables. Even people who are climate science deniers want more renewables. All sensible parties should hammer reform for this.

Josiah Mortimer@josiahmortimer.bsky.social

Reform's Richard Tice has written to energy firms to inform them of the 'political risk' of Reform to renewables Labour official: “Reform are now actively trying to discourage businesses from investing in clean energy in the UK... "They are disgracefully... undermining the UK's national interest."

There's not a single crime in the history of the UK that would have been prevented by a bathroom bill. Not one Bathroom bills aren't about safety, they're about trying to exclude LGBT people from public life. That's it

My analysis of the EHRC "interim update" is out — in the form of an FAQ — laying out my thoughts on the state of the law, and how employers and service providers can best remain trans-inclusive. Just my academic thoughts, not legal advice, but hopefully of use. www.wearequeeraf.com/faq-ehrc-int...

wearequeeraf.comWhat does the EHRC interim update mean for workplaces and service providers? An interim EHRC update instructs UK orgs to segregate Trans+ people in public single-sex spaces - how much weight does it carry and what does it mean for workplaces and service providers?

@danabra.mov yo! Do you know if there’s any good tooling that’ll help visualise which modules have ended up as client vs server when using “use client”? We’ve been playing about with next for a static site and accidentally put a load of stuff in the client

If an MP is doing the rounds insisting that trans women have to use men's toilets, the interviewer needs to be asking what law says so, and what the consequences would be for breaking said law. At the moment what we have is a supreme court ruling and *advice* flowing from that.

Can you not see how insane "Gender Critical" is that it can justify violence against someone doing a wee and washing their hands? He isn't an outlier, this is the normal baseline position. He's just less able to conceal his hatred than many

lots of great replies to this, I think my conclusion is that even though most of my JS projects are pretty simple, they usually have a kind of "everything affects everything else" design that I think htmx isn't a good fit for

Step 1: draw a high level outline of what you want it to eventually look like Step 2: when making changes, try to make ones which move you closer to that vision & repeat

When SaaS products grow and the architecture starts to break down, two types of devs emerge: 1. Those who believe the system is beyond repair and needs to be totally rebuilt 2. Those who put their heads down and fix it one piece at a time I've only seen group #2 be successful.
