RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."
“Flávio has given up,” a Bolsonaro family adviser told The Washington Post. “He’s terrified. He is worried his father will die in jail, that he himself will be jailed this week, and that he may have a long prison term ahead”
There's nuance here about "how do we use platforms owned by the fascists". You *have to understand the political purpose of the platforms* in order to use them to subvert authoritarians. For the most part, Americans simply do not. Centrists (including DNC consultants) do not. Major media does not.
Key lessons from Brazil
Amplify our people. Ignore the opposition.
Use the tools owned by fascists to defeat the fascists? Meet the people where they are. May need to reconsider my staunch position of boycotting Meta for the reason. Thoughts?
My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.
here's the way cars were forced on people
> GM began by funding a company called National City Lines (NCL), which by 1946 controlled streetcar operations in 80 American cities.

I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted
Any politician who’s willing to throw away one group’s rights is willing to throw away everyone’s rights. It’s that simple.
Every single consultant, pundit and candidate who’s shown a willingness to abandon trans rights needs to be shunned from the party forever
Kansas Dem Sen. nominee Adam Hamilton on trans rights:
“I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself”
Ultimately, if you only have time to know one thing about all of this, just know that not a single solitary tech oligarch, tech company, or tech-backed politician has a single solitary serious commitment to the existence of Black political power or economic security in their plans for the future.
Lots of replies and quotes correctly responding to the horribly unethical sleeping-with-a-student part of this.
Some also point out the “older women see through my bullshit so now I have to date younger women” line.
I haven’t seen any comments yet about a tertiary level of thoughtlessness:
The author’s wife eventually seems to settle on a new partner who meets an incredibly low bar:
“She found a boyfriend who cooks for her without complaint, who researches restaurants that accommodate her vegan diet, who shows up consistently.”
Dude. You complain when it’s your turn to cook, you don’t show up consistently, AND YOU TAKE YOUR WIFE TO RESTAURANTS WITHOUT CHECKING SHE CAN EAT THERE!?!1?
Compared to the other ethical failures he admits to this is small beans. But it also feels representative somehow.
Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet.
Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well.
Horrific.
“All Iowans.*
*except for trans people.”
Just saw your despicable anti-trans ad, where you have the gall to say that you oppose discrimination, and then immediately say you’ll take people’s health care away.
You should know better. You should f*cking do better. Don’t throw people under the bus.
I was born an underdog. 21 surgeries by the age of 12 for spina bifida. A kid wearing goodwill hand-me-downs. I knew nothing would come easy, but I never doubted my right to the American dream.
Now, I'm running for the U.S. Senate to make sure all Iowans have a shot at theirs.
This is literally the end of the rule of law.
If a President can pardon people committing crimes on his behalf - and the Supreme Court says he himself can't be prosecuted for crimes committed as part of his job - then the government becomes a lawless entity able to violate our rights without limit.

the example of uber is instructive. it was pretty incredible when the money cannon was firing. now that it's expensive we're stuck with an immiseration engine for workers who depend on it, that sabotages public transport and pours waterfalls of money into anti labor legislation

A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

To reflect on how this plays out in mathematics: Editing, especially by a senior coauthor, should include re-thinking the content at a technical level and not just polishing tone. E.g. adjusting lemmas to the minimal hypotheses to show *why* they are true.
Repeated infections being a “fact of life” is a framing designed to make you think something is naturally inevitable rather than the expected result of a series of public health decisions designed with something other than your health and safety at the forefront.

Part of the answer to "how did we get here?" is that many major journalists—since 1998, Crawford has covered SCOTUS for PBS, ABC, and CBS—are lying bigots. Here Crawford is praising a guy who asked a dumb racist question, glitched out when asked why, then admitted he wanted a Christian theocracy.
Hey, CNN:
We know, because of El-Sayed’s most certainly *not* heated questions, why Tommy was there and asking for this disavowal. It’s because Tommy is an Islamophobic Christian nationalist who doesn’t care about the Constitution.
So I wonder: Why are *you* summarizing the event like this?
Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist political movement, during a heated exchange at a town hall. https://cnn.it/4s7r1TL
Is the newsworthy part of this event the fact that El-Sayed disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood?
The better angle is: Why do *you* normalize Muslim candidates being asked to disavow Muslim extremists, but don’t ask Christian nationalists to justify their hateful and anti-Constitutional beliefs?
Drop a film you watched on a first date.

Mathematicians are dismayed when AI scoops them on the results? How about look for advice from someone familiar with getting scooped and outpowered.
Terence Tao is typically described as one of the world’s greatest living mathematicians. He is on the front lines of a debate about artificial intelligence and the future of his field.
The White House has reversed plans to livestream Nidal Malik Hasan’s execution, but the moral concerns remain. The proposal itself threatens human dignity, risks moral and spiritual injury, and furthers a culture of violence.

The catch-22 being that you’ve also shown a lot of people who are interested in deeper discussion that you’re not an appropriate person to have them with, because you make wildly offensive comparisons to slavery.
Don’t know whether it’s worse if it’s clueless or if it’s “baiting.”
And one benefit of baiting the mob is that I find new people in the replies who are interested in having the deeper discussions. Like you. ❤️
The noise will pass, and I will have gained new allies, even if those allies don’t agree with the strongest version of my point.
In short, I feel like the damages listed in the piece have already been done, and failing to reckon with the damage that has been done is just not a useful way to handle how to manage the Court.

Let's go, Sam Forstag! That's how you stand up for trans people on the national stage.
If congressional candidates in western Montana—one of the most competitive House races in the entire country—can stand up for trans folks in every aspect of our lives, democrats everywhere should take note.
This is rooted in a certain kind of American Protestantism, going back to Norman Vincent Peale, an acknowledged influence on Trump.
This is why we need religion scholars to understand our current age.
After another shooting and the raid on Ilhan Omar's home, Rep. Delia Ramirez says abolishing ICE isn't enough. She has introduced a bill to "dismantle" the entire Department of Homeland Security.
