Greatly enjoying the stock photos used to illustrate news stories about emergency stockpiles. Because it'd be unthinkable to go a week without horseradish sauce 😃

the story goes like this

Welp, there goes another one: pillowfort is shutting down in december. Just too expensive to run, between dev and moderation and low user numbers, regardless of how much they cut their overheads (and I think they were paid rather less than the cohost team were). www.pillowfort.social/posts/8413273/

pillowfort.socialStaff: Pillowfort is closing.I’m terribly sorry to bring this news to you. This is, genuinely, the hardest decision I have ever made in my life, and I have put off doing it for as long as I could. While we did have many people re...

Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

#covid vaccine time rolled around again. Boots is still serving pfizer (this season’s flavour is XFG) and I’ve been wondering again when we’ll get the next-gen vaccines, eg. kostaive, that’s been widely approved but still isn’t available. it isn’t looking great.

Ho boy, do I have a story for you. The question of how ice breaks has been central to glaciology for well over a century.

Glen@gergyl.bsky.social

Didn't know this was especially controversial. Unsupported vertical ice obviously has a structural limit, determined by the distribution of internal fractures, especially ~vertical ones. Vertically fractured ice becomes a column crushing problem. Details are what's not known, and consequences?

This one is going on the list. I can’t quite place what the art style reminds me of, but i really like even the tiny amount that’s on the steam page.

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

One game is Funeral for the Sun, which has the genius premise of Roottrees-esque genealogy deduction but with a Latin American, magical realist setting. But it's more than just a single clever idea; I think the time I spent with it only scratched the surface. store.steampowered.com/app/4088360/...

A fascinating little ring from the Punic necropolis on Ibiza. It depicts a bearded man in profile, but his hair and beard are composed of two birds (!), and his collar is a dolphin. 😮 The Punic inscription reads 'Belonging to Abdim'. 🏺 1/ 3rd-2nd c. BCE. #MuseoArqueológicoNacional 📸 me

For reasons I don’t understand, there were two small field mice foraging at the edge of the road. They were utterly fearless, so I assume something will run them over or eat them shortly. My phone was focusing on the tarmac or debris than the mouse. I have got to get a new portable camera. #mouse

New damage-resistant knitting pattern discovered using maths! I’m slightly disappointed there’s no nice image of the actual knit, other than a tiny photo of how defect propagation is limited. Diagram (b) and photo (e) show the robust knit. It doesn’t look simple, but I Am Not A Knitter.

Fun new bluesky failure. Couldn’t log in to bluesky itself or view my profile on clearsky, but it was visible on bluesky and blacksky. Seems a bit careless to break with such an unhelpful error.

It’s wild to imagine a United States where the death of 8 children resulted in actual policy change. More on brand to see that the response to a bunch of vehicle accidents was to blame the time zone.

I remind everyone, again, that they tried year-round daylight saving time and stopped it because it got bunch of kids got killed in just a few weeks

I can tell when there’s too much moss growing on our roof, because the jackdaws swing by at sunrise, shout at each other and hammer on it to see what’s living in there. There’s no roof space above me, so it’s quite loud.

I used to live by the sea, and herring gulls arriving in the morning made a lot of noise, but the jackdaws are worse because sometimes the hammering sounds like someone knocking at the door so I have to get up to check 🫩

I’ve been caving in waterlogged spaces only just big enough for a helmet to fit through, but this photo produces substantially higher feelings of claustrophobia and fear of drowning in me. Being sliced up by the lost teeth of former riders embedded in the tube seems like schlock horror writing 😬

Qingshan Lake Water Forest in Lin'an District, Hangzhou is a viral attraction sometimes called "Matcha Lake" for the emerald green duckweed (subfamily Lemnoideae). These black swans (Cygnus atratus) & their cygnets are enjoying a nutritious buffet of aquatic plants. Let's learn about duckweed.

Well, these things are fascinating. You can spend years eating them with no problems, and all the while they’re whispering to your white blood cells that the red blood cells are inferior and should be destroyed, and then one day it just happens.

So far no major illness has been reported after mushrooms tentatively identified as Paxillus involutus were sold. It’s not clear if anyone who ate them is out of the woods, Interior Health medical health officer Dr. Andy Delli Pizzi said. thetyee.ca/News/2026/09...

Makes me think about sci-fi habitable worlds and colonisation stories. Maybe don’t drink the water or breathe the air until three generations of more reckless or desperate people have tested it for you. Not a dystopia I’ve come across, but I’m not super widely read.

Do not carry a cold beverage in their presence. Politely decline any drinks or sweetmeats they may offer. Keep a plain iron nail in your left trouser pocket and a sachet or paper twist of coarse salt in your right shoe. Enter and leave your chair moving clockwise. Follow up with a thank-you note.

This is cool, but I really wanted to know where the actual bouy was. It seems to be at an experimental wave power site called SEM-REV, near nantes. juliusvonbismarck.com/bank/index.p... fondation-open-c.org/nos-sites-en... cartes.gouv.fr/explorer-les...

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.
