Anyway, I'm going to avoid stressing too much about posting this and just post this. I've written something like this dozens of times already and I'm ready to just put it out there. Thank you so much for listening. I'm going to go make some beans for breakfast.

Thank you so much to everyone for the kind words. I've been diagnosed with GAD for over a decade now and rarely ever talk about it. There's a massive mental relief in being able to bring it up. The existential dread feels far less all consuming when you're able to discuss it.

In recent years I've made good friends who have reacted with compassion and interest when this sort of thing is mentioned. I've had situations where I can say "I need to step away. My anxiety is bad" and moments where friends will check in on me when I'm noticeably tense. That's helped me so much.

I'd like to be more open about it. Primarily because it helped me to hear other people talk about their mental health and I hope I can do the same for others. Anxiety is especially difficult because its nature makes it hard to speak about. Especially when you need to advocate for yourself.

That might sound like a weird thing to throw out there unprompted but I have a difficult time mentioning it to people. This is kind of a ripping the band-aid off sort of thing. After my diagnoses, there were several in my life who reacted with intense scrutiny. That taught me to be quiet about it.

I have to spend a lot of time managing my anxiety. Early on, I was having near daily panic attacks. Certain things are still difficult like going to the doctor, a theater, or being in a crowd. Some days are good, some days are bad, and some days are terrible. I try to take it all one step at a time.

The book is Strong Female Character by Fern Brady. There have been several occasions in the past year where friends have asked me if I was autistic and my answer was typically, "probably not." I knew I shared certain traits with autistic friends but I thought it had to do with my anxiety problems.

I'll be doing my usually monthly Patreon updates tomorrow. I usually get it done on the first Monday of the month but I am currently a puddle of insomnia and it seemed like a good idea to observe Labor Day this year. Happy Labor Day!
