In January, ActiveHistory.ca launched a special series examining the Indian Act and it history. I wrote a short piece, as an introduction, that lays out some of the basics and included a selected reference list: activehistory.ca/blog/2026/01...
One thing I reflected on when doorknocking during the Vancouver muni election was the ubiquity of the camera doorbell. In this imaginary, everyone outside is now a potential porch pirate, not a neighbour. There is no society etc.
How do you recognise information suppression, and how should you respond?
Check out the toolkit for countering information suppression developed by our ARM project.
The toolkit is designed for civil society, researchers, policy actors, and anyone who encounters attempts to suppress information.
"Permanent" is meaningless wordplay here. Temporary workers pay taxes that support social services, why shouldn't they receive them?
It's not just an Alberta issue. There's a class action against Canada's federal govt for denying temporary farm workers EI. kmlaw.ca/cases/migran...
Success! TransLink has agreed to continue running Poetry in Transit!
Thank you to everyone who signed the petition, shared on social media, and wrote to the powers that be. It took all of us working together to make this happen!
These two graphics tell a more powerful story together than on their own. Strategic voting must cut both ways! #Vote! And text three friends and remind them to vote! #bcpoli
Vancouver's new mayor and council can ignore this bad faith scapegoating plebiscite and instead, address reality
improve people's material conditions: housing, incomes, food
Just in: In Vancouver's "public safety plebiscite," voters supported both measures by margins of more than 2-to-1, despite roundly rejecting ABC, the party that added the questions to the ballot.
Now up to Green-COPE-OneCity majority council how to deal with these non-binding results.
This is very, very bad:
“Information from more than 1.5 million other tips submitted to Canadian Crime Stoppers programs over the last 25 years — was exposed in a massive data breach, an exclusive CBC investigation has found”
Poetry in Transit makes a ride on the bus that little bit lovelier, it supports poets and it promotes literacy. It should be kept. Sign the petition c.org/bBjyg7zb4G
Documents like these are insightful because they suggest the government is knowingly acting out of step with public opinion (and many of their own voters):
Canadians want to prioritize clean energy over fossil fuels, Carney government told in internal report
New public opinion research commissioned by federal government shows a majority of Canadians want to see Canada become a clean energy superpower
I've seen a few references to Harper. The worst part is, this really has nothing to do with who is in political power. It's just how it is. It happens in provincial governments. It is the RCMP.
It is countless bureaucracies whose default response is "no comment"
Here's a work in progress at knowledgekeepr.com. We're building a traditional territory map - something authoritative, relying on legal documents, nation publications...This differs from Native-Land.ca's (now defunct) territory map which stresses that it shouldn't be used as an authoritative source.

The fact that Maahs is standing by her earlier comments is beyond me, but the fact that neither her nor Doerkson responded to my questions asking them to condemn them is even wilder.
BC Conservative candidate Heather Maahs defends blog post about “slave auctions” and Blackface in Chilliwack schools
Maahs said teachers were simply “using drama for instruction”

Alberta goes to the polls today, to decide whether the province should separate from Canada. The fact that it's even happening is nothing less than psychological warfare, waged by damn liars.

If you're wondering what far-flung car-dependent suburb this is... this is in the heart of Kits.
Because of record under-investment and austerity, Vancouver currently has a 400 year (not a typo) backlog on sidewalk builds and repairs.
What I'm trying to say is go vote
Brendan Larsen from Ngāmotu in Aotearoa and a member of the New Plymouth Astronomical Society took this stack over a couple of hours and estimates 14000 satellite trails. This is how bad it is now, it's set to get much much much worse - and then we lose Low […]

Noticed a polling place on my way to work this morning, voted in the provincial election on my way home. No line. Advance polls are great! Was not offered a sticker 👎
You can vote in both municipal and provincial elections tomorrow, so make a plan!
ABC's anti-public space campaigning in the last few weeks is gross and dishonest.
Here's the latest: an effort to score cheap points against the Green Party for a proposal that (a) was passed by Council 6 years ago (May 27, 2020) & (b) supported by Councillors currently running with ABC. 🧵
On a kilometre-long stretch of the Nicola River, Brian Holmes misses the sound of water.
“It’s supposed to be the major river system in this watershed, but it doesn’t have any water flowing through it over the surface."
