There is no solar power crisis. No wind power crisis. No insulation crisis. No heat pump crisis. No e-bike crisis. No electric bus crisis. But there is a #fossilfuel crisis. And a #climatecrisis.

Wolfgang Blau@wblau.bsky.social

We should reconsider the term „energy crisis“ when speaking about the effects of the Iran war. This is very specifically a crisis of fossil fuels and their single point of failure. Fossil fuels are no longer synonymous with „energy“. We have other, better options.

If we didn’t know that the Republicans will be attempting unprecedented levels of cheating, well beyond just voter suppression (which IS cheating), this would be comforting. But they will, so every one of those blue votes need to show up and #VOTE no matter how hard it is. Turn out wins elections.

Economics isn’t necessarily a zero-sum game. But power is zero-sum. The more at the top, the less anywhere else. The fact is, wealth can’t be separated from power. Power begets wealth and wealth begets power. To understand the system, we need to understand the cycle.

Corporate profits are at record highs — but revenue from corporate taxes has plummeted thanks to the tax cuts in Trump and Republicans’ big, ugly bill. Meanwhile, workers’ wages are stagnant and their share of the nation’s income is at a record low. Trickle-down economics was always a hoax.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. 1. Projections don’t win elections. TURNOUT wins elections. 2. Trump-dominated Republicans will do everything they can to cheat, including the kinds that removing observers makes easier, and a LOT of aggressive voter suppression (which IS cheating). Turnout will be harder but even MORE important.

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

These numbers are telling. CBS News projects Democrats at 229 House seats to Republicans’ 206. Look at what voters are saying: • 65% say the economy is bad. • 57% say Trump’s policies have hurt them financially. • DON’T MISS THIS: 83% say government corruption is a major factor in their vote.

I'm going to try to do this cleanly. Today's right wing governments are networked to each other. Those networks are well-documented. You can read about them in books. Following the elections in one node of that network is good practice for understanding the U.S. node.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

Canceled carbon tax. Dismantled the climate action secretariat. Supported expansion of LNG. Proposed removing provincial gas taxes that fund services and transit. Proposed spending tax money to keep ICBC cheap for more driving. — No wonder people stayed home.

Chris Bataille@chrisbataille.bsky.social

One of my big frustrations with David Eby is he cancelled a highly effective, partially revenue neutral carbon tax just because the feds did so (Québec didn’t), leaving a big hole in our provincial finances, only to be annihilated in an unnecessary election 1.5 years later. Excellent legacy.

This is a sign of weakness, not strength. Putin is weakened. Trump is weakened. Aleksandar Vučić just got the boot in Serbia. Bolsonaro just lost in Brazil. If the tide is turning in a good direction, it is because people like you worked to turn it. Voting. Protesting. Fighting.
