IMPORTANT EDITORIAL: “The Guardian view on Oxford Street’s pedestrianisation: cities should be designed around people, not cars.” “The transformation of Europe’s busiest shopping street should be a case study in making cities greener, less congested & more inviting places to live.” @theguardian.com

A game-changer, not just for civic life in London, but for the idea of street transformations for people all over the world.

I've always believed Oxford Street could be so much more than a road. Today we begin a new chapter as the nation’s high street goes traffic free, creating a place where people can spend time, enjoy the atmosphere and experience the very best of our city.

Never forget that when Seoul, Korea removed the Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream, 1000 acre park and improved public transit, not only did it TRANSFORM the city’s public life and economic success, but the car traffic got better. The car traffic got BETTER.

“Cyclists are often perceived as recklessly flaunting road laws. A new study challenges this perception. The study found only 5% of cyclists broke road rules while riding on bike infrastructure versus 66% of motorists who broke rules while driving.” Safe bike infrastructure fuels rule-following.

1. Projections don’t win elections. TURNOUT wins elections. 2. Trump-dominated Republicans will do everything they can to cheat, including the kinds that removing observers makes easier, and a LOT of aggressive voter suppression (which IS cheating). Turnout will be harder but even MORE important.

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

These numbers are telling. CBS News projects Democrats at 229 House seats to Republicans’ 206. Look at what voters are saying: • 65% say the economy is bad. • 57% say Trump’s policies have hurt them financially. • DON’T MISS THIS: 83% say government corruption is a major factor in their vote.

If we didn’t know that the Republicans will be attempting unprecedented levels of cheating, well beyond just voter suppression (which IS cheating), this would be comforting. But they will, so every one of those blue votes need to show up and #VOTE no matter how hard it is. Turn out wins elections.

Congratulations to Toronto @mayoroliviachow.ca on her re-election tonight. Given Doug Ford’s constant interference & distractions, Toronto is arguably the hardest city in Canada to be the mayor of. I’m hopeful that in her first FULL term, Mayor Chow will lean in on more bold, creative city-building.

It appears that Ottawa’s best chance to elect a smart, progressive mayor to take the city to the next level has failed due to vote-splitting. It’s hard to see it happen in a city that so badly needs a fundamentally different kind of leadership in order to make real progress. #Ottawa

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

Ottawa has a brutal track record of picking mayors that are committed to blocking smart, proven progress. Will the city’s voters finally end that trend today? Locals whose judgment I respect say @jleiper.bsky.social would make an excellent Mayor. Remember, turnout wins elections. #VOTE #Ottawa

In the Vancouver election, many thought Pete Fry and the Greens couldn’t beat Sim’s money advantage. “Turns out, they could—with a little help from their friends.” THREE progressive parties worked together proposing a coalition council, didn’t split the vote, and won instead of beating each other.

So Trump’s closing argument is that high gas prices are good because his donors who run oil companies are making bank, Jon Husted has a nice ass but not quite as good as Nicki Minaj’s ass, after 7 months the Reflecting Pool is almost done, and we get a ballroom, arch and helipad.

Ottawa is the Canadian city that most needs a leadership change. From a city-building & governance perspective, it’s the city that comes to mind when I think about a city that should be SO much better than it is. That’s in large part due to who has been in the Mayor’s chair. Don’t split the vote.
