Brazil banned online gambling and people started spending the money on food. It's also an incredibly popular policy. There's literally no downside!

Never forget; you are the Storyteller To borrow a term from one of my favorite authors: Humans are a mythopo[et]ic species; we love to tell stories. We love the stories we tell so much we tell them again, and again, and again, imagining ourselves as the main characters. We even act out the story!

Stories are beautiful because they're just words. They don't have to contend with reality or ethics. We like them, in part, because they're simpler to accept than the fact that everyone exists independently from your experience and live lives just as real as yours. That there is no script to follow

But you aren't a character in a story, you aren't an archetype or a trope. Your story isn't written yet, because it's still BEING written. By YOU! You aren't some story, you are the Storyteller! The real question is whether you're content following a script that was never written with you in mind

But stories are powerful things, and we love them so much, we can hurt ourselves and others in our attempts to live them out. We lock ourselves in roles we wish to embody, even damaging ourselves to fit them, not unlike a glass slipper that will never fit our foot, so we cut off a toe to force it

People see the story of the "soul mate" and shoehorn themselves and their partners into that mold, because they want to feel like things were predestined to work out. But they fight, and have bad days, and never work on their issues because "soulmates shouldn't have to work for it"

abdul is one of the best new talents when it comes to eating a frame frame: without ICE, who enforces immigration law? wrong: ICE is going rogue and must be reformed right: RWers scapegoat immigrants b/c they have nothing to offer, and they've built up ICE to act as an expression of that cruelty

The GFM is up now. With my mom in police custody & on ICE hold despite being in the US for nearly 3 decades, this puts me & my family in a very tough spot If you can, I ask y'all to send some love & support our way to help us fight for our mom's freedom from this unjust system. gofund.me/5506965b6

I am entirely serious when I say that this should be seen as a moderate position. It specifically and surgically dismantles institutions that did not exist pre-9/11 and assigns their functions much as they were assigned pre-9/11.

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the DHS altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.

Yet another issue where the only reasonable position is "everybody goes to jail." Anything less is incompatible with the rule of law.

Billions of dollars’ worth of contracts predicting oil would fall and the S&P 500 would rise were placed about 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a post on Truth Social. CFTC staff began to investigate...then were told to lay off. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

Here's the thing about humans: you can't control existing behavior with laws. All laws do is prescribe a punishment for said behavior. Ex: Making pot illegal didn't stop people from smoking pot, it just sent stoners to jail (and made them ineligible to vote, run for office, hard to get a job, etc.)

If it's harmful, that's when you need to research why people do it, fix problems that cause it, make/fund more attractive options for the non-problematic causes, and THEN litigate the rest. Aim for more rehabilitation and prevention than punishment

Making a law can really only limit behavior via the severity of the punishment. But even in that case, you will find that people just get better at hiding the behavior, they don't stop it And if the punishment is too harsh? You get protests and push back.

So, if you can't control people with laws, what can control a behavior? It's actually really easy: acknowledge the behavior, and understand it. If it doesn't harm anyone/ it's a normal human behavior (teens socializing for example), make better space(s) for it to be done safely and provide access
