my entire life trajectory was oriented towards "being good at things", I sacrificed quite a lot to get where I am today, and now society has deemed expertise not very valuable anymore and for what little remains, AI/people using AI will siphon it out of you the very moment they smell it in the air

Ditto game devs. WE KNOW. I assure you, we have obsessed for weeks about all those thinks you "spotted". We have had multiple hour-long meetings costing millions of dollars of salaries about them. We fucking know, man. I'd have loved to have been a "lazy dev" but I just didn't have the time.

now more than ever, the teachers should try to explain to students _why_ they are forced to write essays. there might be a student or two or twenty in their class that would really really really appreciate actually knowing the reason

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

I like seeing the dev of the SNES core on the Pocket actually telling one of these dudes off. Holy shit.

Something AI is responsible for that doesn't get enough talk: How, when it scrapes a website to illegally steal everything on it, it uses up a ton of its bandwidth allotment, crashing it or racking up massive fees for site owners.

Edd Coates | Game UI Database@eddcoates.bsky.social

Yet again, the Game UI Database is being scraped to the point that it's getting knocked offline. Even Cloudflare's "I'm under attack" mode isn't working. I just wanted to create a resource for real designers. I'm getting so fucking sick of this.

Having tried both here and Mastodon after leaving Twitter has convinced me more and more that the microblog format itself is just plain cursed.

you will encounter more opportunities in life to change the batteries on a smoke alarm than you will to run into a burning building and no one gives a shit you changed those batteries but it is still very important and why are you waiting on a burning building, know what i’m saying, it’s a metaphor

I don’t understand the hand-wringing reaction to claims that nueral networks have a 10% chance of destroying civilisation. Fossil fuel companies have a 100% chance of initiating a mass extinction event. Maybe we could address that?

To be clear I am not saying there are no applications for lots of compute. But capitalism doesn't like people asking what they need and staying within limits. And modern capitalism especially doesn't like people saying "maybe it's a good idea to pay employees a good wage so they can buy our stuff"

platforms should make AI generated content opt-in spotify, social media, youtube, steam, all of them "but then nobody will-" correct!! that is the point

14 hours later and my mentions are still full of angry treatises about badly behaved cyclists. Bike lanes are not a reward for good cyclist behavior! They are infrastructure proven to make cities safer for ALL ROAD USERS. Whatever way cyclists have wronged you is irrelevant to the discussion!

Katie Mack@astrokatie.com

Every conversation about bike lanes is like: "Car crashes kill a huge number of people every day, including pedestrians, cyclists, & car occupants. Good bike infrastructure has been shown to make everyone safer (& doesn't increase congestion)." "But sometimes cyclists break rules & hit people!"

I'm sure it is bad when cyclists intentionally do things that make themselves or others less safe but that is a completely unrelated conversation unless you're pointing out that good bike infrastructure makes it significantly less likely that cyclist behavior will impact other people in any way!

I just want to mention: Even if your AI somehow runs locally and you think it's okay, it's still using trained data from a pre-existing dataset which is still full of stolen work. The sheer amount of data gen AI needs is in the hundreds of thousands, you can only get that by scraping

I used the power of the One Ring. I recognize that it's evil, and I expect a lot of people to be mad at me for using it. Sorry! However, I plan to continue using it. Here's why: (1/62)

Generative AI psychosis and delusion is a real thing, as is the degradation of analytical skills. This increasingly makes conversations difficult with those who have "converted" to using it. Along with the clickbait-ification of everything and the adoption of predatory logarithms. Stay vigilant.

I think the saddest thing I see is that to endorse generative AI, many of its defenders also have to adjust their definition of what accuracy and competence are... and then wind up defending inaccuracy and incompetence. Truly irrational.

a lot of people online are, for various reasons, strongly against correcting somebody else's grammar (at least as long as the meaning is conveyed as intended) How do I easily signal that I want all the grammar corrections that you can give me, because I want to learn the languages that I use?

Uninterested in leading a pile-on but no, AI does not “have access” to everything ever published. Not archival material, obviously, but not secondary material either. Nor across times nor languages. AI is not human knowledge personified. It’s exactly not that, in fact. It’s not even a search engine.

Something I think I may need to be explicit about in regards to my politics is that "yes, we're in a shitty system where you are being oppressed, but you can still make poor choices within this system if you're not aware of how anything works. So learn as much as you can to fight back"
