real stupid. it is more likely for the war in Ukraine to end in a half decent negotiated settlement if Ukraine has the largest possible quantity of arms

Biden for Ukraine. Putin is hoping Trump has enough sway with Zelinsky. Trump has very little. Sad that Ukraine's ultimate victory will be without America. Slava Ukraini

I agree, but it doesn't matter a this point. The time for a 'half decent' settlement was a year ago. Today, the Ukrainian front in the east is on the verge of collapse. Ukraine won the war 2 years ago, but 'allies' egged them on w/ promise of total victory, to bleed Russia: at what cost?

esp. when giving Ukraine the 'largest quantity of arms' means deploying so-called non-persistent anti-personnel mines, which are proven to be 150 times less non-persistent than the DoD claims. Ukrainian civilians will pay the price for generations, and the invader has the upper-=hand at the table.

These landmines were banned under Obama, and were banned within the Ottawa Convention of 1997 by over 160 nations; of which, the US was not a signatory. Biden in his vindictive fashion, is recklessly sending these mines under Trump's repeal of the Obama policy, ironically.

Hard to say. Best I can tell the troops Ukraine sent into Kursk would have been better used to counterattack in Donbas. Putin does not seem to care about Kursk.

Ukraine will not submit to the Russians. With patience and tenacity, it will win this war and will recover all its territories. The day will come when NATO pray to Ukraine on its knees because it enters the alliance.

Is the journalist russian or what? russia pummels Ukr with every russian, iranian, northkorean weapon imaginable, deliberately targeting civilians. War crimes on daily basis, and Ukr should just lie down and take it? The real mistake by Biden admin is to put those restrictions to begin with.

Without those restrictions, Ukraine could've taken out the launchers and the war might be over. With unrealistic restrictions they just handed another point to whine about for putin. Such double standards are infuriating.

How does it make ANY SENSE to call <giving Ukraine what they want> a "betrayal". Heer in the Editor there, right? Because otherwise writing crap like this should be the end of your job.

I say you're a coward who believes Putin's nuclear bluster and would happily let his imperialist murderers goosestep their way to Portugal if it meant "neutralizing state dept propaganda" whatever that means.

You're right. Im a coward for confronting this heavily propagandized community of literally everyone in liberal america. Meanwhile you're a hero for reinforcing the idea that tens of thousands more young people should kill each other because you feel putin wants to take over europe

It’s unfortunately a short sided strategy, one he has no chance of course of completing. We should have either gone all in and put our county in a position to truly provide leading edge weapons to Ukraine or moved them towards negotiations from the start. Now Putin may not quit until he wins

Jeet refused to believe that Russia would invade, and was raging at Biden for escalation when he was shouting to the world that Russia would invade, right up until the hour that Russian tanks rolled across the border. Guess he’s come all the way back around

I think that a negotiated ceasefire is inevitable, and the best we can hope for, but I find it frustrating how many leftists don't seem to understand the long-term consequences of finally killing the UN charter and endorsing the legitimacy of territorial expansion by conquest once again. Not great!

I think you have your timeline mixed up a bit. GWOT unilateralism and the Iraq war buried that order well before Russia started its war of aggression. As usual, there are many bad actors (and many dumb leftists), but US foreign policy has itself never felt particularly bound by these strictures.

I think accepting a negotiated solution means accepting that next time Russia decides it wants a new territory, the folks living there will just accept it, because they'll know the rest of the world doesn't have their backs.

it's cousin to when Putin started the war in 2014 and most of the international liberal establishment, especially in the US, was like "well that's not a REAL war of conquest, best to ignore it"

Precedent we set? The US invades and kills whoever it wants whenever they want because it is powerful. Russia did the same and it is "the left's" precedent? Make it make sense.

There wont be any ceasefire ever. And its not the best we can hope for. We can never accept territorial conquest on European soil again. It would open a whole can of worms we dont want open and throw us into 100 years of war. The only solution is russian defeat.

There is no world where The Nordics, The Baltics and Poland would ever accept some sort of ceasefire or deal. Americans are too american-centric in their thinking. And there will be a meeting in Stockholm tomorrow to lay the foundations of the Nordic-Baltic-Polish-Ukrainian alliance.

None of that crowd has considered the idea the technology needed to create the bomb is now 80 years old and likely achievable by any middle level power really invested in it, so it's gonna be real fun when the Poles inevitably show off theirs

I'm surprised that people who are this anti-Israel don't get deterrence. Israel got more aggressive against Lebanon after the success of the pager attack on Hezbollah and its followups - the Hezbollah threat decreased, which meant Israel fears retaliation less than it did in August.

big fraction of the American left, and The Nation has a lot of history here, is just comprehensively mixed up when it comes to anything post-Soviet or where the US is on the good side

Yeah, that's what I don't get - there's a lot of Palestine-and-Ukraine advocacy out there, especially among communities that are especially in focus now (i.e. trans and enby people - I'm guessing I'm 80th percentile pro-Israel in this sphere and I think Bibi is a war criminal).

What are you talking about? Israel got more aggressive because Joe Biden didn’t call them terrorists for placing explosives in hundreds or thousands of civilian electronics. There will certainly not be any blowback from that precedent.

Military hardware, purchased by Hezbollah for better security, not used by civilians. Remember, Hezbollah claimed nearly all of the dead in the initial pager attack as its own operatives. Biden was right not to call them terrorists and on hindsight the entire operation was based.

I dont understand why Americans think that The Nordics, The Baltics and Poland would ever accept Russia even keeping an inch of Ukraine. There will be no peace until Russia is kicked out.

So the Trumpian right thinks the Russian mafia-state is the good guy. And the left thinks standing up to Russia is “mindless”. Kremlin propaganda has absolutely triumphed in this comfortable, uneducated, and gullible nation.

Putin will not stop until he’s taken all of Ukraine, and then he’ll start on the next neighbor. He will have to die to be stopped, there is no negotiating with him.

WTH is the nation talking about?! Didn’t we just approve of Ukraine using those weapons? It’s up to them to decide if using them is worth it.

I’m skeptical about Ukraine keeping those arms well maintained and in a secure place. More likely, over time those arms are sold off in the “under the table” market. If it happens in western 1st world countries. It will definitely happen in a East European country that has a history of corruption 🤷‍♂️

There is something profoundly stupid about the idea that the appropriate way to prepare for negotiation is to give up all your leverage. Yet is forever being put forward as if it were God's own truth by people who want the recipient of the advice to fail.

if Ukraine wants weapons and authorization to use it they should get it and it is now or never, i don't know why a lot of foreign policy decisions have been made but a bunch of people outside the foreign policy establishment are even worse

Whether you like to admit it or not. The western world which the US is apart must win the war against these autocratic nations. Otherwise if russia wins here, then we head back into the prior centuries of nation building. And nation building will entangle us in a war sooner rather than later.

It is also interesting how the pacifists of the United States, have been marginalized. The left's peace activists didnt vote, they dont matter. The right is in a party full of neoconservatives & behind a supposed strongman. Who just happens to have a faction behind him that DOES support Ukraine.

War is fundamental to human history. Its a fact. And this russo-Ukrainian war pits two spheres of governmental structures. One autocratic, the other democracy. It means a lot to the western people. Win is basically a surrender of the main "leader" of russia. The one who started this war.
