Interesting play sports fans, Sony going with the "piss off everyone, don't make any product worth buying and sell it for a fortune" strat *Cries in vita and launch PS3*

How much we wanna bet it won't even have a noteworthy exclusive at launch? The PS5 barely did (Astro's Playroom, which was a fun budget experience, and Demon's Souls remake...)

We're in a situation where when they announce a game coming to PS4 and PC its "HAHAHA PS5 NO GAMES" and when they announce its not its "Exclusives are toxic to the industry and outdated" and "I guess sony doesnt care about us pc and ps4 users :/"

The problem is they wasted an entire console gen on making GaaS titles that got canned. Like a lot of people, I got pretty burned spending a few hundred dollars on a system with almost no exclusives. Even if the PS6 doesn't cost $1000+ I wouldn't bother buying into it.

I used to think that new consoles came out when the last generation was stretched to its absolute limit. PS5 has like 5 games on it. It feels like that thing came out 2 years ago. Also, the next consoles will probably have no disk drive so what's even the point of getting one

Like, genuinely, the usage of AI, the pricetag, the death of physical media, amongst even more problems, I think in theory that they might have been able to survive just "one" of these problems, but all at once? I genuinely think this might be a death by 1000 cuts.

I kept wondering what kind of exclusive games could ever begin to tempt people to spend +$1000 on a console, and at this point I think GTA 6 might've been the only one that could've worked for a lot of folks. Beyond that...ain't no way.

what on earth is sony thinking, we aren't even due for a new console generation, thing has only been out what, six years? I don't see any leaps in technology improvement that merit new hardware yet, and consoles are loss-leaders so getting greedy about sales of them would be real goofy

To me it's like printers. You buy the hardware for less and then spend a fortune over time on the ink. But it is true, tons of people would buy it just to have the shiny new thing just to have it

while i understand that this is "not their fault" in the strictest sense the truth is that does not matter because no one is buying a thousand dollar console

I'd say this is totally their fault for being among the many tech corpos who thought AI was gonna make them all richer and that only us poors would shoulder the consequences for it

Sony gonna turn this into a real-world MMO quest where you have to break into a data centre, steal three GPUs, then give them those GPUs and $500 and they'll give you a PS6.

you know there's one guy in the boardroom who said "we have to cancel this. its over. we have to emergency pivot to the ps5 as a permanent long-life platform" in like february and he was shot down by the others going its not gonna be that bad we can weather it and now he's sooooo smug

Yeah nah they should've stuck with the PS5 core hardware and done everything they could to make it cheaper with each new revision until people actually start buying it and devs actually start making games for it. It's crazy to imagine the PS5 has been current gen nearly as long as the PS3

no no, they're actually extremely accurate, it's just for the wrong conclusions every single time, they NEVER get anything right by accident

In the same way, Hasbro has announced that basically every super articulated action figure and Transformer is now base price $30. That one I blame more on Trump specifically, but I do think it’s a line that many won’t cross.

even the 1k price point seems difficult to accomplish at this point. I assume that the current plan is to release the PS6 next year even if it costs 1.5k and to just keep most stuff cross-gen for most of the gen, which isn't that dissimilar to our current gen tbh.

in what sense? IIRC Sony has been doing great numbers this gen when it comes to how much revenue they are making so I assume that for them "it worked out". At the end of the day all Sony wants is for people to spend money on whatever system(PS4/5/6) and just take their cut of the pie.

The thing is even before Data Centers swallowed up the consumer electronics industry there was an argument that current Gen consoles could easily have a lifespan of over a decade. It kinda is Sonys fault for not launching it 3-4 years now

just imagining sony making a huge loss as like 5 people buy a ps6 after they prepared like hundreds of millions of units beforehand anticipating everyone to be lining up at stores and toppling grandmas over just to get one

The whole thing is gonna get decompiled on a day and there are gonna be 45 different emulation projects, trust me. It'd only one tiny ass vulnerability in the launch firmware and then they're done

Yikes. And I thought the current gen was a lackluster one. Good luck with that, Sony Especially now after you've burned all of your most loyal customers.

Ps3 actually *was* $1000 in Australia. We only got one because my grandfather died! (Don't worry, he was my Dad's abuser; it was a great Christmas all around for the fam)

At least the launch PS3 gave you a bang for your buck with it being able to play CDs, SuperCDs, DVDs, BluRays, PS1 games, and PS2 games. Not to mention that you could store MP3 and MP4 files along with save data from every PS platform at the time. And let’s not forget it having Linux out of the box!

The PS6 will basically be a $1.5k stream stick at best with the lack of physical media or ability to modify the software/hardware like PC on the market.

tbf the launch ps3 was backwards compatible with both ps1 and ps2 games, was a bluray, dvd and cd player all in one on top of playing games, had 2 extra usb ports and had every card reader known to man at the time under a flap, and a fully functional web browser, making it a multimedia powerhouse

There is a big difference tho: back then, you could wait and get it at a lower price after some time. A year down the line you'd be able to get one for much cheaper. Now it's the opposite.

There’s a whole Bureau of Labor Statistics that believes this number, they made the calculator - take it up with them Intuitively, it makes perfect sense to me. 600 at the time did feel extremely similar to the way 1000 does now.

They've not even really justified the PS5. It's conceptually just "PS4 but marginally stronger" so I can't imagine what they're planning to do with the PS6. Literally the world's most obligated console release, for some reason. Released the PS5 Pro too early as well, no cushion.

Realistically, people are still going to buy it But, it would be hilarious if they get like ridiculously low sales and they have to scramble to find a solution

sniffling. please be nice to my Sixth Robot Son, the liquid feces I am pumping him full of to make him sentient* is very expensive and needs your thousand-dollar support,
