Turn-of-the-millennium Sonic was committed to what it was going for in a way that few other media properties then and now are. Eggman pulls a fucking gun on Amy Rose and launches Sonic into space at one point and none of it is played for a joke.

It's actually built up to with extreme intentionality. The game is very unambiguous that though they're going to inevitably be pulled apart, the grief they feel upon being apart is worth feeling because of what they meant to each other. AND THIS ISN'T EVEN THE ONLY SONIC GAME ABOUT THAT!

It wasn't released in japan but as far as I can tell, is still considered canon *enough* there. The japanese release of Mario and Sonic Tokyo 2020 still clarifies that yes, Eggman Nega is currently considered a Future descendant of Eggman, not an alternate version.

I love the way the IDW comics handle it - he stays in Sonic's time because he's anxious about whether he actually fixed the past and has to be sure he got it right
