Reading this Famitsu interview Uchikoshi did and it seems that the reason the Crash Keys game was canceled was because *Uchikoshi* wanted to use AI, not the publisher. This snippet is driving me nuts. Makes all the posturing with Hundred Line read extremely shallow.
this is one arena where I’m pretty sure standards have just straight up changed (not necessarily ‘improved’—iterative sequels can be fantastic). gaming culture has shifted pretty heavily against “let’s do the first game but betterer”, which, I get, but it’s terrible for managing budgets
this is purely my own gut feeling and i’d love actual devs input, but i get the sense that on top of everything else collapsing, one of the big struggles in games is that the Normal Iterative Sequel, reasonably scoped and made on a quick schedule, seems to sell like six copies now
waking up from a nap to check my phone and see unambiguously good news for the world… honestly a little beautiful. fuck bolsanaro fuck zuckerberg and musk and everyone who controls the internet and thinks they can just take the whole world away from us for free
Brazil’s results tonight are a big endorsement for the idea that every country should have a second “are you you sure about that” election a couple weeks after the first one for the important stuff
If JKR hates trans people so much then why does the new Harry Potter look like a lesbian TA who helps edit her esteemed Midwestern liberal arts school's quarterly poetry review
I don’t say this as a defense but to be honest, I don’t think 1200 are gonna be real computers by 2028. Pcs in of themselves are monstrously expensive now and show no signs of slowing down
Sorry still thinking of $1,200-$1,800 dollar console just conceptually. Those are Real Computer numbers. You can just get a real computer for that kinda cash. The entire premise of the console is “this is a baby computer you don’t control but it’s standardized and affordable” but they can’t do that.
70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...
There are a lot of good arguments about what the Dems should do if they get power, but job one needs to be a drastic reduction in the powers of the Presidency (and probably SECDEF too). If you don’t do that, the game is up. The next person to abuse that power will be better at it.
Some misread this as a call for auteurism, like it’s better to assign a game to a single person. That’s not what I mean at all. I just think it’s good to know names like Mary Kirby, who wrote a lot of Varric Tethras — one of the only characters stitching together three wildly different games.
here it is: the biggest single piece of art I’ve ever made 😳
Inspired by eyewitness book ecosystem cutaways, it’s sort of uh a psychological ecosystem of metaphorfish as one does
The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot
A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead:

it cannot actually be ignored or danced around that the closure of BioWare came so soon after the Saudi and Jared Kushner acquisition of EA. they absolutely did take the studio making EA’s broadly queerest games out back and shoot it old yeller style. do not let yourself or colleagues ignore that
BREAKING: Electronic Arts is cutting 400 jobs and shutting down BioWare, the legendary development studio behind Dragon Age and Mass Effect. www.bloomberg.com/news/article...
you can't judge when bioware was really killed because the mismanagement at the higher level under EA has been so constant and pervasive since the acquisition at every stage that every game shipped at all was a herculean miracle
Yeah, this. Wonderful though it is to see the growth of Spindlehorse and Glitch's production capabilities, if indie animation is to have a chance, audiences need to grow comfortable (and also HAPPY with!!!) seeing animation projects that are rough around the edges.
to me the existential threat posed by AI slop games is less "AI slop games will steal our sales" and more "the onslaught of AI slop and the exhaustion over having to second guess every new game will make people mentally check out from supporting new games at all and retreat to their backlogs"
Steam Next Fest started with ~50 hand-picked games that had missed their opportunity to demo at GDC bc of COVID.
it scaled well for a while and was certainly more impactful than we anticipated at the time, but now the scale of AI slop is untenable. who is still being served by this? *8000* games?
Last month we lost our jobs. This month we made new ones.

Today is the birthday of Jerry Siegel, co-creator of Superman, who changed the pop culture landscape in a single bound. There wouldn't be a comic book business as we know it without him.
We all stand on his shoulders.
Re: no kings, I do find the aimlessness of the movement deeply disappointing but:
a) public, civil protest is not worth nothing (hence why meta tries to silence it)
b) I HATE people who post “why aren’t people violently protesting??” Bitch why aren’t you? You’re not exempt!
zeurel is a goddamned hero for just putting the full-ass budget for monkey wrench at the end of every episode, but i don't know that there's been enough acknowledgement of the fact that the only reason that show looks so good is because he does a little over half the labor for free
Jewish voters massively moving rightward because a handful of Muslim voters are vocally opposed to genocide genuinely can't be helped, sorry. I think antisemitism is a gigantic problem in the US but if they're becoming *republican*, its about israel more than anything else.
it’s worth underlining that the amount which a modern live game is not this is directly the result of devs fighting inch by inch, for months if not years, against the guy at every corporation who demands an explanation for why you aren’t doing this at all times
No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads
the "manga vs comics" debate that starts up every other fucking month is exhausting because everyone who participates in it has not read a western comic in their entire fucking lives. you end up with takes like "the ONLY comics that aren't COMPLETE garbage are ALL indie" spreading everywhere
A lot of this is gutter racism but some of it is people heing deranged about WW2. I saw people saying that 1939 Europe would defeat France! Modern-day, two hundred and thirty nine weapon France!
This is a bonkers question in so many directions, just remarkably revealing in the amounts of racism involved.
Even before you raise the technology issue, this is, "Can ~500m people with PPP adjusted gdp of ~$2tn beat ~1.6bn people with PPP adjusted gdp of ~$16tn."
Like, LOL, no, obviously.
I end undergrad talks with the annoying 'comics advice' of: you have to sleep, you have to eat, you have to move your body in whatever way works for you, you have to engage with the world outside of your desk and outside of comics entirely. sleep is the foundation!! you can't compromise on that!!
Some of my absolute favorite superhero stuff are stories that are unashamed in their portrayal of high fantasy (see: medieval knight fighting a Giant ogre) but earnest and unflinching in their political/ideological Commentary.
The new Frontier, the latest Superman movie, so on and so forth.
Yeah the Babydoll episode of BTAS is a big example but really a majority of the DCAU was pretty much written in a way that yeah it's a kid's cartoon but you'll have moments that actually don't talk down to the audience/thinks to think about-
