This list is kind of ridiculous but - www.techaviv.com/bds "You cannot use Windows, MacOS, BSD or Linux since a number of Israeli software engineers are involved, patents and licenses included are paid to Israeli companies. DOS versions of the late 1980s should be fine in some cases."

techaviv.comBDS - A list of Israeli tech to boycottIf you're serious about being anti-Israel, we're here to help you with a list of things you should throw away and never use again in order to be a true BDS warrior.

I'm Canadian, I'm glad this won't affect me, as proven by the fact I get no say in this Because Americans NEVER do anything stupid that affects other countries without their consent, that's simply preposterous, where's Castle when you need him

The bill's sponsor, Joshua Gottheimer (D-NJ #5), is on the ballot THIS CYCLE. He can be primaried and removed in SIX WEEKS. He is running for primary unopposed. You CAN write in a candidate, but if the write in fails, there is still a Democrat on the ballot, so there's no risk of splitting a vote.

So are government officials, wherever they are and whatever they're doing, with whoever they're doing it with, also going to have to verify their IDs on any computer? Or are they going to be uniquely immune to all this? And then how long before that database leaks and causes a government panic?

This will be the end of anonymous Internet access in the USA; everything you do and say, where you go and what you do will be gathered and tracked. That is why so many new data centers are being built so quickly.

I feel like this would break an impossible amount of existing tech to even implement this? I would hazard that a LOT of tech are running on old legacy code that can't be changed to accommodate this. Feels like it would screw absolutely everyone, be it consumer, business, military, or government.

They prob have some sort of plan to enforce their own shit. Or enforce more Microsoft stuff. They probably just intend to control what people use by banning OSs that won't comply in that state, at least. Some of them already said that it's up to that state to ban them because of that.

Question is if it's a good plan. Are they expecting everyone to just go buy new compatible hardware, during a time hardware prices are getting out of hand? To redo entire server farms that run off Linux? What's stopping someone from just spoofing the verification? And what of international servers?

I can't wait for future infrastructure to shut down because it runs on a headless operating system and according to this law, requires age verification to run, so it doesn't run.

This is just wrong, age restriction for operative systems? This is exactly like a 1984, no privacy, government just watching at you and big brother is there to watching every your step.

So everyone sane and tech capable will shift over to Linux. And if they build this into computer hardware at the firmware level, then people will use old hardware.

Why exactly is it the responsibility of operating system providers to monitor and regulate the population of technology users? (aka everyone) and further, report that information to the government? This guilty until proven innocent crap has to stop.

Reminder that "age verification" = Persona = Palantir + Peter Thiel = that thing that makes you take a mug shot from all angles and open your mouth and then creates a profile of all personal information (fingerprints political views sexual orientation friends and family) and forwards that to ICE.

The intent us to let you assume what they the government and tech corporations mean by "age verification" is you just tell them your age and provide the proof, and discuss WHY and if it's a good idea and not know HOW they're going to do it, until this passes and it's too late.

My Discord account is over a decade old. If they’re gonna insist that I potentially broke ToS to make my account before I was 8 years old and require age verification, they can feel free to argue with my empty, abandoned account when I move to another platform.

The bill was introduced on April 13th to US House Committee on Energy and Commerce. It's being sponsored by the Democratic party's Josh Gottheimer, with Republican Elise M. Stefanik All we know: "Require to verify the age of any user of an operating system, and for other purposes". Not great :/

How about all NASA systems and satellites. Thermostats. Music players. Home automation. The ISS. All military systems. We know this is an overly broad power grab, and unfortunately we also know they're stupid enough to pass it without consideration.

Honestly, maybe there's a silver lining. Stupid law gets passed, is impossible to follow, system collapses, people start being more aware that some laws just shouldn't be followed...

But with the odds even more stacked against regular people. Could you imagine what evil empires of the past could have done with mass surveillance technology? Well, we are about to see for ourselves.

Fuck off. I bought my computer, no one needs to see my ID to let me use the thing I fucking bought. I also have to ask why computers are being regulated but guns aren't. Seems like the wrong priorities here

Already written to my congressman about this one. All the billions of dollars they'll spend on this could be better spent paying parents a stipend and strengthening laws guaranteeing those parents adequate time to spend with their children.

It's basically protectionism for Microsoft, Apple, and Google. Their operating systems *really* want you to use an online account. How this is even remotely workable in an enterprise estate is beyond me.

Technically, in Europe at least, it would be possible for the state to provide this kind of service in a relatively unintrusive way with a protocol that maintains user privacy on both parties (we have free digital identities services operated as public services) still hard. In the US? Omg.

Yeah like this would basically just require some sort of 3rd party trusted CA to "vouch for" your identity and provide a cert, then OS level functions to make installing/renewing that cert idiot proof and secure, and then an API that makes sure you know and approve any disclosed info

Like I'm sure the legislation is a dumpster fire but there's technically good ways to do it (but also yeah do *not* trust the US Government with my data even though they already have it all and gave it to a random doge contractor)

now i'm no cryptozoologist tbh this seems flawed because unlike say HTTPS, you're not making claims directly about a domain and a key being used to serve a website which for computers, which can be used by multiple people etc., doesn't seem so useful

I was trying to think of a good analogy, the best I could come up with was - instead of having a bouncer/door man at the bar checking your age; they stand outside the door of your house, and you can't leave without an age check, because you might go to a bar.

removing every person who endorses this stuff from office is a fire alarm level risk at this point. they're just gonna keep trying to ram this shit through until one of them skates by, like that california bill

i know this has been a thing for a while and im late asking this but HOW do they plan on doing this? computers arent just personal, what about like, public library computers, or ATMs, or computers running like mcdonalds menu screens, whose age will those need to be verified with? what?

These people don't understand that this would require age verification for ATM machines, TVs, fridges, cars, game consoles, phones, self-serve kiosks, servers, electronic billboards, etc. Can you imagine the catch 22 of having to age-verify a web server in order to use it to verify user ages?

Because we can't have children using notepad or file explorer unsupervised. Just kidding, this is for selling the information of adult users and probably also targetted advertising.

These fucking idiots dont even know what an OS is. Anything with a computer in it is running an OS, smart TVs, vr headsets, coffee machines, everything. What about servers? Will server farms need to put an id in all of their servers now? It’s just so stupid

I would be ok with an OS having a parental control option. Most do already but it should be a choice and not require ID. For those calling reps, make sure to stress this is a nanny state law. This is a big button for some lawmakers.

Okay, so in the dystopia where this passes, parents will simply set up "age verified" devices for their kids since tablet is the only babysitter they can afford under economic decline While everyone's data gets harvested and mass surveilled by not only governments but big tech corporations as well.

Wonder the impact this'd have on schools, libraries and internet cafes-- anywhere someone might want to go to look up things like help resources they can't look up at home --not anything good, I imagine.

I'm pretty sure everyone is going to say "Fuck you, we're not complying" if this gets passed. Then the entire mail system will be clogged with fines, and then eventually we will have fight off police officers pounding at our doors. I think you know what we have to do to prepare for this. Civil War.

I'm not holding my breath. The American way is cower and comply. But god I am WAITING for the day people finally step up to the plate. Like how much is too much? We had a full blown revolution over MUCH less.
