Most every time I post about politics nowadays, I get a number of replies from people saying stuff along the lines of “we’re all doomed and you’re a naive idiot if you aren’t cowering in a hole waiting for death.” Even if you feel utterly doomed, why are you trying to spread it to others?

I am trying to be patient because I 100% get that people are terrified but I am really struggling with all this knee-jerk public defeatism from other liberals and leftists right now

I think those people are still just in the early parts of the grief cycle. Most will eventually stiffen their upper lip to focus on resistance. I mean, they are halfway right. Things are going to be awful. We need to prepare.

Republicans thrive of fear and loathing. they couldn’t get anything done in his first admin, the house couldn’t get anything done the last 2 years since taking over. Reps can’t govern and this group of ragtag halfwits won’t get anything done either. Be worried but don’t live in fear.

Passive nihilism; nothing matters, everything sucks, just give up. Active nihilism; nothing matters, so you might as well say 'fuck it' and try to change the world for the better.

Way I see it, I now live in a country where some people actively opposed the Nazis, some people actively helped the Nazis, but most people just tried to get by. We remember the names of the first group because there weren't that many, but they're the ones we admire. Everyone's got choices.

Everybody is entitled to feel the way they feel, but I think it’s simply wrong to actively attempt to make everyone else feel totally despondent along with you.

By which I mean “don’t go into other people’s replies and tell them to abandon all hope forever.” Way too many people seem to be doing that right now.

Good number of people could use a watch of Gurren Lagann which has 2 overall messages 1) Fight the power until you die 2) an even bigger drill would fix me

There must be hope, agreed. Let's take account of what is to be. The insurrectionist owns the legislative, executive, and judicial branches. Its cabinet is filled with yes people. We must realistically align with like-minded and intentioned people to prepare for future generations.

I can't worry, at this point, about my own discomfort. The people have decided our immediate fate. So be it. The seeds we plant now will not bear fruit in this generation. This is not pessimism. This is reality. I will still smile and laugh after 1/20/25. I smile, knowing that my people persist.

I was ready to fight after the incredibly improbable election results, but there was no one in the Democratic Party standing up to lead. Russians were calling in bomb threats to polling places yet everyone conceded democracy instead of fighting like he!! to preserve it. It was NOT a normal election

I think this place, as much as we love it, is the center of the universe for this kind of dooming. There are also a TON of people (from Bouie on down) pushing back against it. I naively thought it might have calmed down a bit by now. But I guess we just have to keep pushing.

I totally get it and I often feel the same way - I guess the key distinction imo is “avoid spreading your feelings of despondency to others as much as possible”

It’s weird because politics is my job so I understand the vitality of not rolling over. I’m exhausted and a bit emotionally dead inside from the burnout and the situation but I’m not waving a white flag and certainly not publicly. Nuance is a lost art among the masses!!!

I think nihilism is cheap, easy, and so corrosive to empathy that it compels those that drink deeply and happily at the well to demand everyone else become as isolated and nihilistic as they are, and if you don't you're a moron. But I'd rather be a moron than filled with disdain and hate.

I feel like I'm having to remind people constantly lately, of how effectively despair can be weaponised, and that it's a trick they shouldn't fall for. The enemies of liberty and human rights want us to be miserable, despondent, hopeless. We should not afford them that victory, that submission.

I have a pretty robust feeling of doom/“we’re cooked” in my heart but not only does it feel counterproductive to spread that feeling but my personal temperament is exceedingly hostile both to giving up and other people who do. Even if the odds are very long it’s never over until it’s actually over.

I think they're trying to reinforce their belief system by convincing others its correct. The fierceness and irrationality of the pursuit underlies the desperate need motivating the communication.

I have been reading a good but hefty biography of Grant and the troubles he faced during Reconstruction were not dissimilar to ours now. We will get through this.

In a recent WiTH podcast by Chris Hayes, he strolled down memory lane to the re-election of George W Bush. Bush seemed invincible, but then it all fell apart and his 2nd term was a failure. Events & opposition can really change things. (The podcast guest was Anna Galland)
