"ICE has made the classic Nazi mistake. They've invaded a winter people in the winter."

I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

Another great essay from Charlotte, with a kicker that I, a Cubs fan, laughed out loud at.

"They’ve gotten just about everything they want, and it’s not enough. It’s never enough. These people are never happy. They crave outrage. They demand purity. They’re apoplectic that the first American pope actually reads his Bible." charlotteclymer.substack.com/p/these-peop...

I have wondered if the New York Times has been acting as handmaidens of fascism because the paper's leaders find it appealing, but now I'm wondering how many people with prominent positions there are just genuinely stupid.

This refers to "rank and file DOGE staff." Ok, I'll bite. Who are they? Where are they? What is their source of funding? Who pays their salaries? Is DOGE a government entity? Which Congressional committee has oversight? Is it a business? Registered in what state? Is it a nonprofit? Is it tax-exempt?

i love the story about Elon lying about being good at a video game because it’s not the worst thing he’s done by a mile but it is maybe the most fundamentally pathetic

I would absolutely not want an AI diagnosing me or giving me therapy right now unsupervised, but I would definitely be interested to have a competent human doctor consult one about me and validate whether or not it maybe had some interesting insights.

That a dude with a couple cameras and a plate of appetizers can make something worth $82.5 million and a media company looks at that and goes "couldn't we make even more money if we had AI do it?" tells you exactly how stupid these people are

TheDesk.net@thedesk.net

The $82.5 million sale of "Hot Ones" studio First We Feast is part of a broader strategy at BuzzFeed to shift away from human editors, writers and content producers in favor of artificial intelligence, which result in "high-margin, tech-enabled revenue lines."

"Hey, Ma'am. Yeah, had a good Friday on social. Yes, Ma'am. Tree video did very well and we got to tell Mike Masnick to lay off the CO. Heh. Yes, I think he'll listen this time. You too, Ma'am. Thanks, much."

I have been on amazingly competent, kind, and empowering engineering teams, as well as toxic, self-serving, incompetent, and miserable engineering teams. All were at Amazon. It's a big place and spans the entire spectrum of great to awful.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

I once asked an ex-Amazon employee how they continue to attract techies given its reputation as a horrible employer. Their response — working at Amazon is like going to prison, it sucks, but you’re really fit when you leave from working out all the time.

It cannot be overstated that the United States is the richest nation ever to have existed in human history and people voted for this because they were upset asylum seekers from oppressive dictatorship got work permits during the lowest period of unemployment since the 1960s.

the contradiction of trump is that he is a party leader who is indifferent to the fate of his party and its interests. this is an asset in a general election and a huge disadvantage in governing

that trump has real electoral juice does not make him some kind of master strategist. he was actively bad at being president the last time around and shows every indication of being even worse at it now

Seriously. Just try, for one moment, to imagine Elizabeth Warren saying on tv “I promise I’ll stop drinking if you give me the treasury.” Or a woman of color saying it about literally any job

Emily Taylor@profemily09.bsky.social

Can you imagine a woman being allowed to say this, omg

the atlantic or whoever is not looking to be reasoned with when it posts "we should give every child a gun" or some such. they are click piggies. if you find yourself saying "mr. the atlantic, sir, this is out of hand" you are playing right into their click piggie hands
