If you think Free Movement is a bad thing just say that. Don’t dress it up as a trust / public opinion thing. People will disagree. You may have to debate with them. That’s fine. You’re an MP. It’s what you do.

Politics.co.uk@politics.co.uk

“The perception that promises can subsequently be revisited by a political establishment removed from the realities of working communities has left lasting scars”, writes Labour MP @melanieonnmp.bsky.social 🗣️ EU free movement debate risks undermining voter trust www.politics.co.uk/2026/10/mela...

Because polling is so ubiquitous, and accurate, these days you get a lot of this. People laundering their own opinion through what the public think. Just say what you think and stop hiding behind it.

Why are MPs spending so much time chasing councils and resolving routine casework instead of scrutinising government? Revive Redcliffe-Maud, and draw on Derek Senior’s city-regions. Give local authorities real powers and funding. MPs should be national legislators, not complaints handlers.

Replying in a quote because it’s an interesting thread. Basically, I firmly disagree. It’s ineffective altruism. Lawmakers are powerful and can do big things and should focus on that. Indeed if they did that, there would (or should) be fewer problems to mop up!

Politics! A Prime Minister making an argument. Trying to persuade people of something. Again.

A possible Zeitenwende from Burnham to Ben Riley-Smith: open to freedom of movement, no to the euro or Schengen

At some point it will stop being entertaining. But today is not that day. Having dealt with so many glory supporters of theirs at school it’s endlessly entertaining when they plunge new depths.

Sigh. Last line of this story "As a proportion of the economy, debt was lower than a year earlier, the ONS said."

This post is unavailable.

It doesn’t have a sequel, but I can’t see a Master & Commander 2 being anything like as good as the first. The answer to this skeet is Kingsman though

Name a film with a bad, unnecessary sequel.

In a Knight’s Tale the crowd is totally silent after Paul Bettany’s introduction of Heath Ledger’s character. Not because it was bad, but because they were all extras who didn’t speak English&couldn’t understand what he had said. Mark Addy then improvised a “yeeeah” and they all joined in and cheered

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

The Prince Charles Cinema Secures its Future The Prince Charles Cinema is thrilled to announce that we have signed a new 25-year lease with no break clause, ensuring our projectors will keep rolling for years to come. #YouSavedthePCC

Would be very funny if we did have a referendum and rejoin just hand waves all the actual difficult details away and then win, like leave did in 2016.

More in Common on public views of different potential conditions of EU membership. Joining the Euro starts with broadest opposition: 48-24 (-24) Accept free movement is 51-25 (+26) support in this poll, having been one of the core headaches for Remain in 2016.

Referendums are bad though and we should use them as little as possible. Just put it in your manifesto and win a majority if you want to rejoin.

I think the team behind The tasks on Great British Bake Off have misunderstood why people watch it. If a group of talented bakers are all failing at the task, it’s because they haven’t been set up for success. We watch it to see them succeed, not fail due to ridiculous timings #GBBO

If every single pupil was immediately stumped by some independent work in my lesson that would be my fault for not settting it up properly, not theirs. #GBBO

In Oppenheimer when he’s standing in front of the flag with 50 stars on it following The Trinity Test. In 1945, when there were only 48 states. I am not a crackpot.

Trap (2024), is a very silly film. But they do succeed at making it tense when he’s trying to escape the arena. Once they leave the arena it just totally falls apart.

Though, cards on the table, in my ideal world we would have shifted those interceptor stocks and then told Ukraine to absolutely keep blowing the crap out of Russian oil infrastructure until every last Russian soldier was either off Ukrainian soil or buried in it.

Hardly an original take but it is Quite Annoying to imagine how much the UK (and me, and you!) would all have more cash today if Donald Trump hadn't decided to start bombing Iran for *reasons*. Where's the White House impact assessment on my nursery fees. www.ft.com/content/2cb1...

I don’t think the current Stewards of the BBC understand the value of the brand at all

Nick Hilton@nickfthilton.bsky.social

I hate this so much. The BBC should be providing good quality, good value programmes that the private market won't cover. You and Yours (which I kind of hate), Thinking Allowed and Free Thinking are exactly the sort of programming that the BBC is i) good at, ii) not haemorrhaging money to make.

In the simplest and most reductive way, the Uk political class seems to have resolved to pay 4% of gdp a year to investors to avoid raising taxes by 2% if gdp a year. It sounds mental when you put it like that but that’s actually the situation.

On the annual Gilmore Girls rewatch (it’s autumnal) There are many understandable ways that Emily / Richard act, and you can forgive them for. But their general treatment of Luke is not one of them.

Luke’s not from their world. He has no idea how things are supposed to be. Yet he always shows up, puts on his best and tries. And yet they are consistently rude to, and about, him. Rude about his suit at their renewal, for instance. He also clearly loves Lorerlai and is kind to & supportive of her.

The best time to raise income tax was in the summer of 2024 when they took over. The second best time is right now.

Also absolutely love how they presumably all watched the last series and the whole “oh that’s just Alan” whilst he was a traitor the whole time. And then this series they’ve immediately gone in for “oh yes that’s just Richard E Grant”. Incredible #CelebrityTraitors
