I think this is a really good example of how “personal-use” things AI can be extremely good at and, without it, probably wouldn’t exist otherwise. Creating hyper-tailored things for super specific purposes is feasible now.

Still working out some kinks but I thought I'd share for people in a similar situation. We have a mostly nonverbal autistic kid who can actually do sight-words OK. I realized I could make music videos with exactly his sight-word set and favorite topics using Claude (the model was sonnet 5.5).

As someone who has not & hopefully never will own a car in the USA, mass car ownership is a kind of brain poisoning that is hard to describe. A subconscious need for the world to reshape itself around an absurdly wasteful way to get around, without any imagination for alternatives.

Inspired by a conversation about the inevitable “people are moving to the city so we need to build more housing” met with “BUT WHERE WILL THEY PARK?!”

I think we’re losing the plot with command line software. The goal isn’t to recreate a GUI with a blocky terminal aesthetic, it’s to embrace the “universal interface” of text streams.

It’s worse than this. Having been in the room with many of them (long ago, before I knew they were psychopaths), the tycoons who are left running the industry have an active contempt for ordinary people, including their own workers. They actively want to oppress, control and punish them.

I wish people would stop looking at AI as an in-group shibboleth and instead as a social and political problem to be solved. Yes, slurping up everyone’s intellectual property was evil, so what do we do about it now? Call it even after the lawsuits work themselves out? Nationalize the training data?

It’s already one. There is more open corruption in Trump’s America than I experienced in the most corrupt governments in Nigeria’s history.

Please tell me that restaurants and food trucks that use AI-generated pictures of food aren’t doing well. I cannot fathom wanting to eat somewhere based off of genuinely unappetizing fake pictures of food keywords.

Not sure which vision insurance plan I should sign up for: Choice, Signaure, Select, Choice Plus or Advantage. Actually, I’ll just go blind.

Today, four justices on the Supreme Court tried to argue that the line in the constitution that says "All persons born in the United States are citizens of the United States" doesn't mean if you're born in the United States that you're a citizen of the United States. These justices are illegitimate.

Mark Joseph Stern@mjsdc.bsky.social

I am stunned that the constitutional question was so close. I thought it would be 6–3 or 7–2. It is profoundly disturbing that four justices would allow either the president or Congress to rewrite the plain text of the 14th Amendment. This is obviously a good outcome, but the margin is alarming.

My job has an old codebase that uses Playwright for testing. I went to read the documentation and frankly I don’t recognize my profession any more.

more websites should be like this

The Spanish national railway system saying that tickets cannot be purchased on their website at certain times during the night because the system is resetting is 🧑‍🍳🤌

It would be so simple to change the laws so I don’t have to do my taxes by hand but instead we’ve spent billions to automate the notoriously disliked process of… writing and recording music.

They're right. LLMs have totally changed software engineering. For better or worse? It actually doesn't matter. It's already happened, and now we need to deal with it. Yet I'm still talking to people who think generative AI is worthless textual hallucinations, bad music and polydactyly deepfakes.

Y'all are really sleeping on AI. Not that it's good or that people should use it. But it needs to be taken seriously. And this is getting borderline into absurd purity testing on whether someone uses AI or not. The reality is that AI is here whether you like it or not. Need to focus on the problems

ChatGPT, Claude, Grok et al. are going to shape the future in a major way. We need to mitigate harm and it's not going to be by dismissing the technology or its users outright.

Tried vibe coding and now I’ve got a large codebase neither I nor this software I paid $10 to use understands

Made the switch from Nginx to Caddy a while ago and very happy with the results. My rec: the docs over-complicate things. skip the API and JSON. Just edit one system-wide Caddyfile and restart the service via systemctl.

So a lot of the hype around LLMs and a lot of the userbase just fundamentally misunderstands what the technology is and what it’s capable of, instead treating it like a mythical supernatural or religious being. The industry openly encourages this delusion for profit

Once again, in case you are interested in trying Linux, please just go with Ububtu: the least sexy, most accessible and mainstream choice. Leave arguing about Arch vs openSUSE to the future.

One of the all-time greatest books in the CompSci cannon. Can’t wait for the update! 😍

The second edition of Designing Data-Intensive Applications, by myself and @chris.blue, is finished and sent off to the printers! Ebooks should be available in the next week, and print books in 3–4 weeks. Sigh of relief. 😅 (BTW, this is a good opportunity to support your favourite local bookshop!)

Over a decade of frameworks desperate trying to compete with ExpressJS and nobody’s even come close. I love it.

Thinking about this graph a lot, showing how LLMs have essentially killed Stack Overflow traffic and, I'd extrapolate, most other coding forums like it. So what will happen in the future? When new libraries, languages and frameworks are released but without these sites for the LLMs to train on?
