We don't need to speed up production. We need to slow down. We don't need to write code faster. We need to think through what we write. We've spent decades working to ship faster, and that's landed us in a world of hurt. Build better products, not faster.

Much ado about the role of renewable energy (RE) in the Spanish blackout. The investigation into the effective cause is still ongoing, but many pointed to the fact that RE has no ‘inertia’. Is that true? The answer is: yes, but ... 🧵

I thought it was remarkably fast! 👏 Getting the cities (mostly) back online before night fall was a huge win in so many ways. When/if we learn more about the causes it’ll become clear how it came back online. But it’s my understanding that there was black start required.

Jonathan Buonocore@jjbuonocore.bsky.social

Question for 🔌💡 folks! Isn't it sort of a big deal that the Iberian peninsula got power restored so quickly? Or did this not get bad enough to reach "black start" conditions? www.carbonbrief.org/qa-what-we-d...

I would be remiss not to live post from #spain to #energysky today; here’s the grid mix now (massive blackout across the country) vs yesterday. Courtesy of @electricitymaps.com Looks like the gas and nuclear have *vanished*. But solar is ~half of what is was yesterday. And it’s plenty ☀️ today

The fossil fueled power plant closures never seem to draw nearly as much mainstream and social media attention as do the renewable energy shortfalls.

Tom Harvey@tom.electron-one.com

German ⚡️power price went above €1000/MWh (avg is 75) last week. Weather meant 16GW less renewable generation than usual. Blasted intermittent sources! There was also 11GW of fossil generation unavailable, due to malfunctions. Tech malfunctions. Definitely not Enron-esque trading malfunctions. 🔌💡

It’s almost as though the likes of BP and Shell have an incentive to give the renewables sector a bad name… 🔌 💡

Patrick Galey@patrickgaley.bsky.social

In an archetypal display of hubris, BP and Shell are exiting renewable energy generation, 5 years after wading into the sector with all the arrogance and distain you’d expect of people who make their money from some of the most heavily subsidised products in history www.ft.com/content/318e...

There’s a false dichotomy in AI discourse: 1. AI is dumb. Nothing to worry about. 2. AI is becoming hyper intelligent. Panic! When the below perfectly highlights the danger in AI being dumb, and humans are applying it foolishly*. * That’s assuming the kindest interpretation of our applications.

Two reasonable ideas that are not working. 1. We'll build so much wind, solar, storage that we'll cut into FF in global power, sending emissions into decline. 2. We'll build so much wind, solar, storage there'll be no need for nuclear. #energysky

Now this place is cooking, maybe worth doing a big old energy thread. Let’s talk about how electricity prices are set, why they’re so high in Britain, and how we could reduce them… 🧵

Why I’m optimistic about the energy transition: Humans tend to underestimate the pace of innovation and overestimate the inertia of incumbent technologies. Clean energy technologies have scaled much more rapidly than predicted by modellers
