A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

Good transit advocacy involves: 1) Identifying problems and holding leaders to account 2) Identifying solutions and advocating to get them implemented 3) Working to bring more resources into the transit system to solve problems and improve service @bryanculbertson.com does all 3 all the time

If I were trying to get people comfortable with riding buses with no adult employee on board, I'm not sure I'd start with school buses. The hand-waving here is not enough to comfort me given the obvious "Lord of the Flies" scenarios. open.substack.com/pub/changing...

I get tears in my eyes when I take a minute to relax and sit back at either Sunset Dunes or JFK Promenade. Just a few short years ago these spaces were filled with nothing but cars. Now they are filled with people of all ages -- joyful people taking a deep breath and slowing down for a minute. 🥹

Do you like crayoning transit lines? Use the new annotation feature on Transit Explorer to try out route ideas; you can label them and see their lengths, then export maps. In the US, you can also compare against local data, like population & jobs density! www.thetransportpolitic.com/transitexplo...

This video camera study showed that less than 5% of people on bikes broke traffic laws while riding bikes, yet 66% of people did so while driving. And perhaps even more importantly, if you REALLY want even MORE bike-riders to obey laws, build more protected bike infrastructure. Via @carltonreid.com

"And I still remember when we opened our second segment, this one woman said that she got to work in about 27 minutes when it used to take her an hour and 10. And she was almost in tears... “I get to see my kids two more hours.” Man, that’s powerful stuff we can’t quantify."
New #TalkingHeadways podcast episode! This week we're joined by Jon Nouchi, Director of Transit for Honolulu. We had a great discussion about a whole host of topics including the idea of iconic transit systems, time as a performance metric, humanizing transit systems, and the Skyline rail line.

I think even thought it's about the BQE, there's a great number of questions this piece asks which was should be asking ourselves... "...we should be precise about what constitutes an alternative. A different highway is not necessarily a different transportation system."
