So much to say about Brazil, not least of which is the role that Erika Hilton, a Black trans leader and most voted woman politician in Brazil, played in mobilizing folks for Lula. She was behind the critical, concrete, economic promise of shorter work-week. theprint.in/feature/erik...

one of the really useful takeaways from fukuyama's political order books is a clear conceptual understanding of what corruption *is* in its fundamental nature. and the answer... is patronage networks organized on personal connections! corruption is *inherent* in these discretionary systems!

America's Highway Trust Fund spends far more than it brings in in gas and truck taxes, and the US constantly bails the fund out from the federal general fund and by taking out loans. The Bay Area will pay ~$1.3B/year to bail out the fund yet again, starting in 2028. From @maxmautner.com.

wellstone was the first politician i ever got to volunteer for. people love to quote “we all do better when we all do better” but i try to live by this one: “If we don't fight hard enough for the things we stand for, at some point we have to recognize that we don't really stand for them.”
Twenty-four years ago today, on October 25, 2002, Minnesota lost Senator Paul Wellstone. We also lost his wife, Sheila, and their daughter, Marcia. Campaign staffers. Today, take moment to honor Wellstone's amazing legacy.

so the xx/xy group plan to 'protect women's sports' by infiltrating supporters' sections, whining online about being called names, then posting photos and trying to dox teams' most passionate fans? at this point not treating them like a hate group akin to the proud boys or kkk is willful ignorance.
Some hateful folks in the North End have their messaging blocked by flags and lead to a “Trans Lives Matter” chant

I think this is a very astute read of both this horrific ad and the emotional anxieties of an estranged MAGA base writ large
If that ad is still living rent-free in your head as you wonder, "What the hell were they thinking?" this edition of my newsletter is for you. Because I have a theory. www.altrightdelete.news/p/was-this-a...

Every single statewide elected official makes less than Portland City Council and local county commissions. Congresspeople don’t make much more. The governor makes less than six figures. State legislators aren’t paid a living wage. Want to have our best people doing these jobs? Raise the pay.
I'm telling you, he should think about running for statewide office! His name recognition is way up there now!

The fact that the president's doctors are giving him the dementia test over and over again -- tracking his decline, most likely -- and that the president keeps bragging about having to take that test should be a five-alarm fire.
Trump: "You know, the first question -- they have a lion, a snake, a giraffe, and a bear. And they say 'which is the snake?' ... by the time you get to number five a lot of people are left out on the road ... I get no credit for it."
seems increasingly clear we're underestimating how the much the exploitative dem campaign fundraising texting machine has damaged relationships to the party base and straight-up caused harm to vulnerable populations, all for consultant grift. this shit's gotta be ejected from the party apparatus
Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.
"This class—and we use the word “class” intentionally to mean the firms, consultants, and strategists paid millions of dollars by Democratic campaigns to raise money, place ads, and set strategy—is extractive, and this extraction is central to many of the party’s pathologies"
Just as a private equity firm buys out a corporation and strips it for parts, a consultant class is raiding the Democratic Party and getting “generationally wealthy” along the way New from me and @adambonica.bsky.social newrepublic.com/article/2163...
characteristically great coverage of some of the biggest swing districts up for play by Carlos Fuentes at the Oregonian
it's a constant talking point among oregon's republicans that rural counties are subsidizing portland's buses ODOT's allocation of STIF keeps funding relatively proportionate - if anything, on the margins many urban areas are helping subsidize transit service in rural parts of the state

ten years ago this week Trump literally went on television to plead with the Russians to release Clinton’s emails to distract us all from his “grab em by the pussy” tape, they did, and the media circus around it was just enough to eke out an electoral college victory and now we are all in hell
Sudden vulnerabilities deploy at critical election moments; news articles appear just before elections; information affects votes; and still you deny how deeply americans have always been steeped in propaganda, influence, and at the whims of technology.

how on earth the presence of this human hemorrhoid is still tolerated in our local civil society is beyond me. just disgusting that whatever power his wealth/relationships to certain reactionary elected leaders is enough that somehow he hasn't formally been rendered persona non grata in city hall
Today in the Housing and Permitting Committee Chair Avalos had to interrupt and call to order Brian Owendoff who violated our rules of decorum and engaged in ableist slurs at the dais. Mr. Owendoff’s comments were deplorable and the chair was right to gavel him out.
