I feel extremely attacked

When the weather gets hot, please take special care for the goths in your life. With their floor-length coats, platform shoes, and velvet capes, it’s hard for them to thermoregulate as we do.

Eight years ago I got held up at gunpoint by a FDLR guerrilla near Nyiragongo, past the UN line in North Kivu, DRC. We were taking fissure measurements and I had my film camera on me, taking shots until we were held up. I just realized the guerrilla is in the background of one photo, watching us.

My dog absolutely freaked out about needing to go out at 4 am. Thinking he actually needed to go out, I quickly learned he was just being a manipulative little jerk. His morning walk is AFTER coffee today, thank you very much.

Since I’m looking up content for two very different levels of skier, I think my algorithm is getting confused by the dichotomy of “how to stand up on skis” and “drills to send Corbet’s” as two types of searches.

Since we weren't living together four years ago, my poor wife was not aware that my Canadian ass is perfectly willing to marathon every single curling event at the Winter Olympics. It's a winter sport that involves physics and rocks. What's not to love?

I don't think starting World War III should be considered "a distraction" from other things even if it does distract from other things.

New paper alert! tl;dr: the seafloor of Europa is probably tectonically inert, meaning little to no active fracturing that could expose fresh rock to seawater. Without such water–rock reactions the prospect for there being life within Europa just took a big hit. A thread:

I genuinely didn’t think the finale of Stranger Things respected the audience’s intelligence and laid it on thick to avoid any need for media literacy but judging from the reactions online maybe my faith was misplaced. Glad other people are having fun, tho

Y’all 1. Eleven repeatedly talks about breaking the cycle of violence 2. Will explicitly lays out how Henry is a victim 3. Henry, who constantly lies and always must be in control, rejects the idea he is not in control The media literate response is not to assume Henry is suddenly 100% accurate.

Happy Polar Pride Day! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️ Today is a special day in the international polar science and operations community when we celebrate the contributions of our LGBTQ+ colleagues. Polar science is the ultimate teamwork environment - and making sure everyone feels included and welcome is crucial.

The blackjack date picker is incredible

My power company sends me an update on my power usage relative to my neighbours, but since I’m in Amsterdam I really feel there should be an option to compare my power consumption with my neighbours who also own synthesizers.

It's fake, for those who haven't looked into it too closely. Lots of AI morphing in the background near the coastline and foreground where the terrain meets and the waves push up. Fair play to this one being trickier to spot, it looks more trained on real tsunamis, but people: look for morphing.

Since people are still doing it and I'm going to have time to kill until I figure out what to for the rest of a chaotic week that promises to have lots of little pockets of down time: 1 like = 1 opinion about subducting slabs.

If we want better fashion culture in the US, we have to lower the cost of housing and commercial real estate, support independent craftspeople, build denser neighborhoods, improve walkability, and get rid of overly restrictive zoning laws. Let kook culture thrive.

Linguists should have a serious talk about the concept of mono- and polygenesis and philosophically pick a lane. Don’t become an Altaicist, but at least recognize that we’re already doing this with polygenesis by treating unknowables as impossible just because they’re unknowable.

I’ve always firmly believed everyone should just be required to double major in one crunchy thing and one non crunchy thing. The tech landscape would be less of an ethical wasteland with more arts education. And lots of arts degrees aren’t super valuable skill sets compared to how they’re advertised

What’s the benefit of college students taking courses outside their majors? Some see it as teaching vital skills; others condemn it as costly time better spent on career skills. theconversation.com/college-gene... #edusky #highered

Just know if you're walking around Centraal and your American boomer ass starts making "me love you long time" jokes about my Asian neighbours I will absolutely loudly call your ass out for all to hear.
