sure but the burden of proof is on the people suggesting the inanimate digital object is conscious, not those suggesting it very likely isn't

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

Again: “AIs aren’t conscious” is a strong, affirmative claim. It implies a lot of specific things about consciousness. It requires strong evidence. “We can’t say for sure if AI is conscious” is a weaker, cautious claim. It doesn’t make any particular evidence about consciousness.

Electricity is 23% of global final energy but delivers 37% of useful energy and powers 46% of the global economy. We don't need to replace every fossil joule. We need to replace the services. A much smaller task. Great to see the @iea.org’s new Electrification report finally measure this.

Not saying that some of the sneering might not be justified in this debate, but also note what Lera Boroditsky has to share about what can be observed in english (monolingual) speakers about their bias to attribute agency, blame and punishment in ways that differ from other languages/speakers.

Germany is the epicentre of the China Shock 2.0 reverberating in global markets In a new joint paper, CFR's Brad Setser and I show the shock is a key driver of Germany’s economic malaise. And it's accelerating Berlin needs to stop admiring the problem, and join efforts to fight back 1/many

In service of today being „national“ zipper day in remembrance of the patent for it having been issued on April 29 1913, behold a tour de horizon on polite and witty ways of letting people know that their fly is down across multiple cultures and languages.

The second best phrase I’ve heard for when someone has the zipper of their pants undone is the Chinese 天安门开了. It means “The Gate of Heavenly Peace is open.” The best phrase I’ve heard is the Spanish la farmacia está abierta y el doctor dormido. It means “the pharmacy is open, and the doctor asleep.”

(1/17) www.faz.net/aktuell/wirt...

If someone on Tomorrow's World in the early 80s had told childhood me that one day I'd watch a live colour broadcast of astronauts rounding the Moon on a wireless telephone I'd never have believed them. But here we are. www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/cl...

Strait of Hormuz transits really do seem low. From a relative mean of 7.8 ships/pass to a mean of 0.33 last week. Figure is derived from ships detected in Sentinel 1 sat-data, ie independent of the present electronic warfare in the area.

We recorded episode 104 of our podcast, and while our guest, Rebecca Barth on Ukraine was *truly brilliant*, I think the second part of the podcast is even better because it is exactly the seemingly-super-nerdy-but-actually-truly-relevant stuff we set out to talk about when we started this.

It looks like you can easily replace „System 1 type violence“ as described in the article with „System 1 type voting“ in an environment that is increasingly shaped - for each individual - through social media into a permanent anger laden „you or me“ situation. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

“Uruguay did what most nations still call impossible: it built a power grid that runs almost entirely on renewables—at half the cost of fossil fuels. The physicist who led that transformation says the same playbook could work anywhere—if governments have the courage to change the rules.”

Very interesting project by @bruegel.org here. Remarkable differences still in market value across Europe.

We launched our @bruegel.org EU Renewables Value Tracker based on great work by @mariejuge.bsky.social & @aroth.bsky.social: www.bruegel.org/dataset/eu-renewables-value-track Five insights 🧵: 1) The value of additional solar plants in south-east Europe and particularly Italy is still very high.

Bellingcat’s contact email has always been a magnet for people with fairly unusual views; paranoid delusions, sprawling conspiracies, the works. But recently, the pattern has shifted, we’re seeing more and more emails clearly written with ChatGPT.
