Hi! I'm Alan, a horror writer from Tasmania. Talking Scared called me "The Lord of Weird Australia" and This is Horror called me "Australia's master of literary darkness." The graphic below shows all my stuff and how it interacts. I hope you'll give something there a go. More here: alanbaxter.com.au

i am inviting anyone from a legacy media organization to explain to me why the house judiciary dems report on trump’s epstein’s ties and multiple allegations of rape isn’t worthy of extensively reporting on. i’m serious. i want to understand.

So, wait, has NaNoWriMo rebranded as "Novel November", paid for by ProWritingAid, which used to be a spell/grammar checker but now is (you guessed it) an "'AI' grammar checker"--in short, yet another way for a griftslop machine to grab human-written text? Do I have that right?

Ah, this sucks. What a legend this man is. One of my fondest con memories is sitting down for lunch with @scalzi.com and Walter at a @supanovaexpo.bsky.social some years ago. One of those real pinch me moments. I got to briefly meet George too, but I'm sure he won't remember that!

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

Also at this con, I got to hang out for a while with Nichelle Nichols who was LOVELY. She squeezed my thigh and said I needed to come visit her and she would show me around Chicago. Wild times!

Six inches never feels like quite enough, but like twelve inches is too much, it fills you up to the point of pain. I wish subway did a sandwich halfway between the two.

Saw someone say recently, "Gen X, do you still listen to new music or are you stuck with stuff from last century?" First of all, how dare you. Second of all, half the legends from the 80s and 90s are still making good music. Third, have you never heard of Ren?

We tried "everyone is entitled to an opinion" for three straight decades and all we have to show for it is four thousand cases of measles and a death cult running the government. It's time for people who don't know what they're talking about to shut the fuck up.

"I don't understand queer people!" "I don't understand trans people!" You know what, Chad? There's a metric fuckton of stuff you don't understand and it's still real. It's also nothing to do with you. How about you focus on your own shit and leave people alone.

Rowling *never* writes about women’s rights, workplace discrimination or the threats to women from predatory men. I tracked her posts for five months: Well over 200 hateful transphobic smears. Not a single post about women’s actual concerns or needs None

You know what doesn't get enough love? Horror short stories. From today through Halloween, I'll update this thread with Horror short story recommendations. Stuff you can read in a sitting while feeling like the shadows are watching.

Second only to people with NO kids telling me what I should do. I wouldn't even presume to suggest anything to another parent - with any kind of kid! - unless they actually asked me. Try walking in our shoes 24/7/365 before you fucking spout off.

Clive Barker, baby!

Annalee Newitz@annaleen.bsky.social

That thing where you start to feel like you're friends with authors whose last names are close to yours in the alphabet because you always see their books when you do a vanity browse at bookstores ... #authorlife #books

More often than not, I'm sandwiched nicely between Clive Barker and Agustina Bazterrica. Which is damn fine. (If I'm there at all, of course, so please ask your local bookstore to stock my stuff!)

Billionaire JK Rowling is to be the subject of a BBC Scotland doc. Rowling spends much of her time and part of her huge wealth funding anti-trans law suits and organisations. You can tell a lot about a person by their yacht. So let's take a look at Rowling's 300ft yacht Samsara.

Knowing queer people exist won't turn your kid queer. Knowing trans people exist won't turn your kid trans. But if your queer or trans kid gets to see and learn about other queer and trans people in the world, it may very well keep them alive.

I walked past some teenagers in town today as one of them was saying, "No way! LMAO!" Except he actually said that, like some rangy, spotty French cat: le mao! He wasn't even laughing. Just said le mao like it's a regular word. Unbelievable scenes.

This is the way. I'm always happy to be tagged (unless it's a negative review, that's just a dick move) but reviews are for readers. I don't need to see them and I am ETERNALLY grateful to everyone who boosts the signal about books. It's lifeblood to us.

Happy 85th anniversary, Wonder Woman! "We have a saying, my people. Don’t kill if you can wound, don’t wound if you can subdue, don’t subdue if you can pacify, and don’t raise your hand at all until you’ve first extended it” (@gailsimone.bsky.social) Art by @nicolascottart.bsky.social

It's award season again so I'd like to remind people that THE RISE came out in February this year and is eligible, as are all 5 original novellas in it. If you think it worthy of your vote or recommendation, I would be enormously grateful.

In this episode Dorian Ravenscroft talks to me about their polar debut, THE WHITE NORTH HAS THY BONES. It’s fantastic! The arctic horror tradition, their books relationship with The Terror, why the icy north is such fertile ground for Queer stories, and my strategy to survive starvation on the ice.
