There was no hit to the pocketbook so severe as to make people elect the “IF IT TAKES A BLOODBATH [to crush the hippies and civil rights movement] THEN SO BE IT, NO MORE APPEASEMENT” guy Governor of California

First of all I will not allow anyone to say "Tony Soprano" without the title of sheik.

A leftist wargame nerd once grumbled to me about guys rather too breathless about the Mighty German War Machine in WWII: “They talk as if the Nazis only lost because the sun was in their eyes for a moment, that they •deserved• to win. And it is obvious why they rationalize that.”

Trump sounds genuinely upset that Putin didn't defeat Ukraine in one day, which he insists Russia could've done had their generals not taken "a wrong turn"

LL Cool J correctly identifies the trinity here, something actual military theorists (like Martin van Creveld) struggle with.

My online girlfriend was so shocked by the Ukraine drone strike on the Russian data centre that she's been too upset to message me all day.

I genuinely mean this. I cannot imagine a more bleak dystopian notion than the idea of all art being turned into slop designed to coddle my exact perceived intentions. The point of literature, film, music, and art is to be exposed to the interior lives of others. Who are these people.

like I suspect many of you on This Website, I think a core reason why I find Eliezer Yudkowsky and his rationalist and effective altruist satellites so intensely annoying is because I had a VERY similar “being a super weird, pretentious, hyper-literate kid” experience - I just, you know, grew up.

we have control mechanisms for this. it's called The Law. these guys should be held personally liable for these harms. the suicides, the thefts, the intrusions into computer systems. they should be sued and prosecuted as appropriate. problem immediately solved

Certain kinds of smart people tend to have a "sexy apocalypse" problem when it comes to thinking about risk. E.g. skynet turning everyone in paperclips, while bad, is also *kind of cool and fun* at the same time. Where the reality is that most actual disasters are both stupid and disappointing.

I had a professor once whose area of expertise was government finance. And the thing that has stuck with me was when they said that they basically can never actually talk about it outside the classroom, because it's something every asshole has an opinion on - most of which are based on complete BS.
