It’s never been more clear that racism is a scam perpetrated by wealthy elites to convince working people to blame someone other than the wealthy elite.

I think in fact that there is a very good “originalist” argument that the founders - who were breaking away from an actual king - did not, in fact, intend to imbue the presidency with the power to order people to do endless crimes on his behalf and then pardon them for it

Just been such a revolution in my worldview to realise that people like Musk actually believe this, this isn't just the nonsense they feed the rubes so they can do coldly rational mercantile calculations in smokey rooms among themselves. No. It's rubes all the way down, they're that stupid.

Toby Buckle@polphilpod.bsky.social

i don't think we can come to a reasonable compromise with this

YES let's keep talking about 2016!!! For the rest of our lives I hope a day never goes by that we don't talk about 2016.

probably small comfort to ukraine but it is a little interesting trump and musk are blaming instead of trying to take credit which is usually something both of them can't help but do

So Musk is saying it was the Trump Admin who did it and the Trump Admin is saying it was Musk who did it.

When the American government is lying about the count of American corpses, things are pretty scary.

we really are so tremendously lucky that mamdani is actually genuinely interested in governing and capable of doing it well, the list of charismatic guys who can’t do one or the other is very long and he could have done so much damage to the movement instead we got this

Rumors about “rigged elections" are now a fixture of U.S. elections, leading to diminished trust in election results & democracy (broadly). These rumors can sometimes be hard to debunk, esp. in their early stages. Our UW team has identified the 6 common ways that election integrity rumors mislead:

Nobody ever asks me, but my advice -- pragmatic, not ideological -- is that Democrats should NEVER EVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES cede ground to Republicans on anything.

31 years ago Newt Gingrich shut down the office of Explaining Computer to Congress and ever since we've had money pour into tech while Congress abdicates regulatory responsibility and now the leading industry in the country is engineers making machines that operate online wihout any guardrails.

some of them will but the unfortunate fact of the matter is that nothing really gets close to matching the United States for science funding - the rest of the world doesn’t have the capacity to just freely absorb what we’re losing here a lot of folks will leave the profession entirely

I know all software is created with AI now, so I’m “using” it in some second-order way. But programmers have always been perverts. All software was created with Emacs before and no one ever demanded I care about it (except the perverts). I’m normal, just leave me alone?

Did you think X/Twitter was the only one doing it? Algorithmic feeds are not your friends.

It’s very surreal seeing social media algorithms suddenly start pushing German-language AfD content while in Germany 4 of the first 5 reels on my Facebook are just AfD posts, plus one random Star Trek reel (I’ve never engaged with AfD content other than checking their FB page for event info)

I don’t want to dunk in any one person, as I see this argument a lot, so I’ll post a screenshot rather than quoting it, because this sentiment is common. Peter Thiel has a philosophy degree. Lots of these guys have liberal arts degrees. Credentialism & reverence for institutions won’t save us.

Get off of X/Twitter and honestly probably anything with an algorithmic feed. For X/Twitter we can actually measure and statistically validate how it permanently warps your worldview.

The Author, Séamas O'Reilly@seamas.bsky.social

Have seen this Nature piece about the effects of X's algorithm mentioned again and it bears repeating; exposure to a right wing algorithm makes you - measurably and predictably - more right wing, even after you stop using it. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

front-end code is both the most tempting target for programmers to want to replace with AI, and also the hardest to fix AI's fuckups on, because bugs are subtle and can't be caught with easy boilerplate tests
