All that compute and it still can’t write “located” and “attendance” legibly. Worse than using AI to generate things is that no one bothers to proofread this slop or stop to think whether this looks good. And what’s with the model’s obsession with curved text?

Henry Fung@henryfung.bsky.social

We are really going back a hundred years for the sheer amount of text on AI generated posters. Everything is emphasized (so nothing is emphasized), no hierarchy of information, use of slop images instead of universal clip art. No one wants to tell the designer this looks like garbage apparently.

It's like the canadian bacon in "hawaiian pizza", also from Ontario (Canada, not California).

there's a burger chain in toronto that sells "california style" burgers, which means that the buns are inverted. not a thing in california. im losing my mind at how stupid this fuckin burger looks. i can't believe they sell this as a regional specialty.

Can we have a serious conversation in the planning world about the proliferation of uber-woke/protest/communal representation language being used to oppose safe streets and transit? Because it's a real thing that's happening a lot and our systems are not equipped to deal with it.

The folks who were going to protest the Bergen St. bike boulevard and bus redesign on Thursday are now doing it on Saturday morning. The white women organizing this have coopted BLM imagery, and they've dropped the fact that they're protesting against "fast buses" from some versions of the flyer.

Why is there literally only a single elected official in the Greater Seattle region who is unambiguously good on transit?

The Sound Transit board is about to vote on a 2027 service plan that starts 2 Line service 25 minutes later every day and ends it 15 minutes earlier Mon-Saturday to provide more time for system maintenance. Claudia Balducci jumped in to say that the agency's goal should be running trains 24/7.

Some interesting observations here: Nashville and Austin both have job geographies that look more coastal than Sun Belt, suggesting investment in public transit there would be very successful. Chicago and Philly, despite strong downtowns, suffer from inner ring decay. Dallas is The Bad Place.

🚨 URGENT NEWS: 🚨 Spokane Transit has officially announced its official mascot. Introducing: Marmelade the Marmot.

When it rains heavily, many streets in Santa Barbara become dangerous to cross. The ramps are in the same place as the gutters so unless they’re right next to drains, they will flood.

It would be better if it said “Codes Should:”

They rolled out a new set of talking points with the overall one-sentence talking point being: "Building codes save money and lives."

Dropped my ballot in the box at 6:43 Sunday evening, got a text that it was “received and will be counted” less than 22 hours later. Vote!

Ended up making various curries (chickpeas, lentils) for dinner, also roasted sweet potatoes, tempeh stir fries. That was the highlight where we learned to cook something new. The rest was convenience and comfort. PB&J sandwiches for lunch. Cereal in soy milk for breakfast. No ultra-processed foods.

This makes me both sad & angry. I remember in 2022-2024 King County did a detour (closing segment of Mercer Slough Trail & redirecting people onto neighborhood streets), they only created a route map diagram online; I had to ask for detour signs to be installed. The signs made it a lot better.

First time making a video like this. Construction/ detours always put cyclists in such a vulnerable position. Let's do better together youtu.be/VDAEhfYK5Ls

I rented a car recently and chose a compact. When I turned up at the counter they told me they didn’t have the car I reserved and gave me a minivan; the only other options were trucks. Everyone wants the gas saving vehicles. Well at least I’m not stuck owning one.

Michael Smith@mesmith35673.bsky.social

Our rental car was “upgraded” to a pickup truck. This is the least efficient vehicle I have ever driven, by far. Our two suitcases and backpacks barely fit in the back seat. The truck gets a whopping 19 miles per gallon so I now have the upgraded experience of paying even more for gas.

When I moved to SB, my commute was 3.5 miles one way and 18 minutes of walking and the bus, now it’s 10 miles and 36 minutes (or an hour on the bike). Parking also isn’t free and costs $60/month. It still doesn’t make financial sense for me to have a car. I don’t need one for daily life.

As for trips, the Surfliner is great for going to LA. Going to the Bay Area is another story. Even after gas, the rental car allowed us flexibility in travel plans and didn’t cost that much more than Amtrak for two. I really want that service network envisioned in the state rail plan.

After gas, the total cost of the rental including taxes and insurance came to 58.2 cents per mile. According to AAA, the total cost of owning and driving a brand new small sedan 15k miles in 2025 is 55.9¢/mi. Not bad for 2026, I guess.

There has been an explosion of video game decompilations, many by AI-assisted reverse engineering, that allow old games to be run on newer hardware with bug fixes and enhancements. Now someone is taking on Adobe with “clean-room” clones of its creative apps like Photoshop, Illustrator, and others.

arstechnica.com“Software is over”: Bold AI developer takes aim at Adobe with open source clonesOpus-built Creative Cloud alternatives are ambitious, free, and nowhere near finished.

I tried loading my Illustrator maps in their clone and the whole program ground to a halt. It doesn’t properly retain layers or overlapping artboards (like Affinity). Complex text (Thai) is broken. Can’t paste text into their InDesign clone either. So, yeah, still a long way to go.

First time seeing a transit agency charge more for paying with debit/credit/mobile wallet vs cash/closed-loop card, using transaction fees as the reason. I am not surprised.

Many gas stations charge 10 cents per gallon on top of the cash price for people who want to pay with a card.

California needs to take over local transit agency operations and start funding operations at the state level. It's insane that Orange County's agency can just destroy regional rail for the entire LA metro area.
