Yeah I think this one is super nuanced. We all participate at one level or another in systems that are extremely harmful to someone. If I couldn't be understanding toward non-vegans, I couldn't expect anyone to be understanding of me when I buy iPhones or fast-fashion clothes, etc.

When I was a kid, HIV was a death sentence. They scared the shit out of us about it. Now it’s a lifetime regimen of medication to manage it but you can otherwise live normally.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Well, guess today is the day to find out how many servers I’m responsible for… and how many of my favorite websites run PHP…

So Bitbucket is changing its SSH host, and we have ~1 month to update all our git remotes. All of them. Every. Single. One. I’m going to lose a solid day to this between my locals and Packagist and deployments. 🫠

Some days I feel guilty about not using my standing desk for standing. Today is not one of those days. Yesterday was leg day.

I looked this claim up , and went to X, and looked at my "for you" feed. Today it informed me that women deserve to be treated badly, that trans acceptance is a cover for pedophiles, that the furry art community is inspiring to prevent me through evolution of furry fandom through its hatred of AI.

I'm sure X is remarkably friendly if you aren't the target of racial slurs and harassment campaigns. Anyway, I wonder how many "niggers" I'll have to sift through if I start posting there again?

quoting this knowing that now you'll have to click to find out what server this person is talking about (and they are absolutely correct). What kind of server could be so contentious, literally so full of potential discontent (let alone content)? "braver than the troops" gets thrown around a lot..

Triple-Q@triple-q.bsky.social

Whoever chooses to willingly moderate this server might actually be some of the strongest and bravest human beings of all time

OK, the clock is ticking on my thermal label printer. Just had to re-install Rosetta for the print drivers, which means it’ll break in macOS 28. I’ve got it shared via a Windows PC; what are people using these days to bridge to AirPrint (which should work without drivers)?

film’s not dead, and as it turns out, neither was my kiev 88. (though it did eat 3-4 rolls of film in the loading process, RIP my wallet) 📸: Kiev 88 🎞️: first 3 photos pro 400h (RIP), rest portra 800

So A24 wants to mine the Creative Commons for profit, but doesn't want to honor the terms of CC licensing?

Matt Mullenweg might be rich beyond reason, but I've never stepped on my dick in such spectacular fashion I got sued and alienated everyone in a community I spent decades of my life building, so I guess I have that going for me.

MapQuest has 1.5 million downloads since not changing the name of a lake on a map. The people desperately want someone to stand up to this frail loser. And apparently it’s gonna take a mapping company you forgot existed.

Bold of them to leave out the drama while showing a picture of a sketch *written for the drama.* (see alt text if you don’t remember)

Nothing in this announcement suggests it’s anything other than the same FAST channels you can find on Roku, Plex, and a long list of other apps. But hey, new spot for @electricnow.bsky.social?

I just finished up a complete rewrite of my 2015 Columbia House piece. I more explicitly underline the story underneath the story: Every sketchy SaaS business model has roots in business models like Columbia House. tedium.co/2026/08/24/c... updated @tedium.co

tedium.coColumbia House: The First 12 Cost A Penny, But …In the 1980s and 1990s, Columbia House could do no wrong—it was a great way to get 12 CDs for a penny. But its business model predicted a lot of bad e-commerce.

One day… One day I’ll actually be online in time to participate in one of these…

How many cases? Since the Truman Administration (!)... 51. Well, okay, that's clearly a crisis. That's more cases than there are trans athletes in professional sports.

hello bluesky, this is going to be just as jarring of a change for me as it will be for you all… my demands are simple: hire me and i can go back to being an ever-changing incorporeal sky avatar https://dame.is/available

dame@dame.is

should i change my avatar to a photo of me during this season where i am networking and looking for my next job? is that gonna be more beneficial to my efforts and make me more approachable online?

My foray into using Gitea Actions to have a privately-hosted git repository that will automatically build and deploy on a schedule has hit a sizable, but entirely predictable, roadblock. Not bad for an evening, but still a ways to go.

I just typed out a comment to a post, re-read it, thought "Oh, right, I'll look like a fucking creep if I post that" and then deleted it, which is a reminder that the reason I came up with "The failure mode of 'clever' is 'asshole'" is because I need the warning as much if not more than other folks

I wasn't sold on this until I got to the implementation. It's so smart I'm probably gonna spend my day redesigning at least one or two of the theme toggles I've built.

🔥 New blog post: Dark mode toggles that expose three states (system, light, dark) seem like the best option. Until you think about user goals, that is. Before rushing to disagree, hear me out. lea.verou.me/blog/2026/da... PS: As a data point, @jakearchibald.com was converted after reading this 😅

Posts like this are what make me afraid to even touch the stuff for fear of cooking my brain this badly. If it’s trolling: congratulations, it worked. If it’s genuine: yes, because that’s what I’m doing now. If it’s (as I suspect) written by genAI: 🙄

Yes, you kind of have to wonder how Leonid Kantorovich, who discovered linear programming and the algorithms that underlie AI, manage to do it without AI. Maybe it's because he didn't outsource his brain to the primitive computers he worked on.

Yes, that is how products work. Oh, wait, you’re Microsoft. Okay… So you have something you want to sell. If people aren’t buying it, then you need to find out why and either fix the problem or pivot to another product…
