Look, it's simple. Be kind. Be curious. Tell the truth. Ask for help. Help others if you can. Don't hurt people. If you do, say you're sorry, mean it, and prove it. Think before you speak. Say less. Say please. Say thank you.

I should note that David Velazquez at the Daily Progress does a pretty terrific job of fact-checking McGuire's claims in the DP article that all this sprang from:

email.mail.dailyprogress.comJohn McGuire blames illegal immigrants for Charlottesville's pricey real estate marketJohn McGuire says illegal immigrants are driving up Charlottesville's real estate prices, accusing Democrats of pushing mass migration to "destabilize the United States."

I'm not endorsing the content of the original post here (he said, journalistically), but let's just do a little fact-checking on John McGuire's notion about illegal immigration and Charlottesville real estate prices, shall we? 🧵

In short, no, the facts on multiple fronts do not support McGuire's assertion. Most noncitizens in Charlottesville appear to overlap with the legal international student population at UVA. And noncitizens' demand for housing is just one fairly small factor in housing prices' overall rise.

So at least in Charlottesville proper, it sure seems like most if not all of the foreign-born, noncitizen population are legally permitted students or workers at the university. I guess kicking them out could free up some housing, but it might have other, less desirable effects.

Is it normal when you're an official from the Justice Department interviewing a convicted criminal, and when they start to talk about crimes you say, "no, stop, don't tell me about any crimes"?

Amanda Marcotte@amandamarcotte.bsky.social

This report is genuinely overwhelming, in terms of the evidence both against Trump and of a ham-fisted cover-up. Including one instance in which Ghislaine Maxwell was actually about to mention one of Trump's young accusers and Todd Blanche told her to stop talking. The media response is "yawn."

Crowd is forming early outside the middle school on Crozet waiting for the Three Notched Trail meeting. Landowners were invited 30min early. (Post delayed because the middle school was a data dead zone.)

Early this year, I visited Ingram, a TX town of ~1,900, to check out a tip. The area was starting to recover from its worst flood in a century. But as Latino workers drove to jobsites to help rebuild, the tipster said, a cop in a black Dodge Charger kept stopping them ... 🧵

Throwing this group or that under the bus to win an election is basically just human sacrifice. It’s saying you gotta throw stones at the person who drew the black mark in order to get a good harvest. It is Dark Ages behavior.

Tim Sweeney is worth $9.6 billion. If he wanted to make this point in a comic form, couldn't he afford to pay an artist for it?

It's just refreshing to see any public figure talk earnestly about something normal and positive that they really love. (Also, his voice sounds like Lin-Manuel Miranda on the HAMILTON soundtrack; this is a compliment.)

Fall is here. So we can finally talk about this serious topic... Jonagold vs. Honeycrisp apples.

This man regularly says things on Wall Street earnings calls that you would usually hear from someone face down on the hood of a police car as the handcuffs go on.

“Palantir cofounder and CEO Alex Karp states ‘AI will undermine the influence of highly educated, often female voters and give it to working class men. We have feminine energy running our cities and our courts,’ he complained.”

Is there a reason why installing Adobe Acrobat Reader (which I have to use because some PDFs are refusing to open in Preview) will take 2.36GB, and if there is, do I want to know what it is?

Legit baffled that the Bond folks didn't just cast Patrick Gibson from 007: FIRST LIGHT to play the role onscreen. He's got Connery's smirking charm and Craig's ability to shade in subtle, wounded vulnerability. He's so dang good at being Bond!

EUMAEUS: so then I called back my flock and invited him to my home for dinner — POLYPHEMUS: — and then he blinded you? EUMAEUS: what? No! POLYPHEMUS: but you at least tried to eat him, right? EUMAEUS: I feel like we have very different ideas about how shepherding is supposed to work.

We are seeing a hunger disaster unrolling before our eyes. Since Republicans passed the Big Beautiful Bill, 2 million kids have lost food assistance. These are by far the deepest SNAP cuts in history, and each month, we find out it’s even worse than we thought. The worst is yet to come.

In the wake of unprecedented cuts in last year's Republican reconciliation law, SNAP participation & spending have been falling — and the decline is much deeper than the Congressional Budget Office initially projected. www.cbpp.org/blog/congres...

Local news reporting to small newspapers is the backbone of communities across the nation. The fact that they are dying and struggling will leave information holes that may never get filled.

The history behind Question 3 on our Virginia ballot is worth knowing. In 1901-02, Virginia rewrote its constitution to purposefully shrink the Black electorate. A delegate expressly said the aim was to eliminate "every [Black] voter who can be gotten rid of, legally!"

Q: The typical practice is DOJ doesn't usually release charges this close to an election. Even though Ms Lucas isn't on the ballot, her daughter is. Can you speak to the timing? BLANCHE: The 60 day or 90 day practice is not in writing. That's not part of the justice manual. There's nothing improper
