When i walked in, the count was at 312 people, and there were at least thirty behind me in line. Great turnout, great meeting, great time-delayed-livetweet!

Crowd is forming early outside the middle school on Crozet waiting for the Three Notched Trail meeting. Landowners were invited 30min early. (Post delayed because the middle school was a data dead zone.)

Virginia Capital Trail broke ground in 2005 and was completed in 2015. One neighborhood had raised safety concerns, so VDOT built a fence. As soon as the trail was done, people in the neighborhood wanted holes in the fence so they could get to the trail.

They have a simplified trail visualization that shows 18 simplified segments, 1-3 miles each. Each segment is meant to be valuable by itself (this is cool!) These segments are also associated with various community partners that can help get each piece done.

We've each been given three little "dollars" to spend on our preferred segments. There's room on the back to write your reasons. Guest speaker is from a nonprofit that focuses on helping people get outside and be active. He's worked on a lot of trails around the country.

They have the preferred route on the board... one segments far to the west seems to have a small bit with two parallel legs. The east has two separate legs into the city. All 250 crossings are controlled by either stop signs or lights. No trying to slip through gaps in traffic.

Crozet has the "longest continual natural segment" (i.e. the existing trails) of any part of the system. They intentionally went a bit north of Lickinghole Basin to minimize environmental impact concerns. "What to build first" seems to be the main thing right now.

Current target is to determine the route, prioritize initial segments, and estimate costs so that we can start raising money, doing final designs, and finally installing trail. Tomorrow Engage Albemarle will open a new survey. Will be open until Nov 15.

When picking the route, top criteria were safety, connectivity, accessibility, user experience, and constructability. They used this to score the initial segments (they have a cool heatmap visualization).

This is the 3rd public meeting, first was in 2025. Operating under a 2022 $2m federal grant to build out the plan. There's a half hour presentation and then ~1hr to look at big boards set up around the room, mostly showing routes and soliciting feedback on sticky notes.

A number of property owners filed out and congregate outside as the general public filed in. The room is big, but seating is around tables instead of in rows, so I expect some will be standing.

Come out this evening!

I'll be at the meeting re: Three Notched Trail Monday evening. Stop by Friends of Three Notched Trail table to say hi #cville. engage.albemarle.org/three-notche...

Driver who accidentally got lost on the dead-end maintenance road bumps a tree right after bumping the "residents only" sign our HOA installed, get this, because _kids on bikes_ are such a destructive menace.

Michael Crenshaw@crenshaw-dev.bsky.social

Please ignore those fucking signs. It's my HOA, and it's because one person was worried kids' electric bikes would damage the trail. That's stupid, because the only kids who bike those trails are in the HOA, and part of the marked-off trail is asphalt. People are so reflexively anti- social.

fwiw I think the tooling to catch already-shipped bugs is ahead of the tooling that prevents them from shipping in the first place. For example, GH has built in AI scanning for a repo that runs on an ongoing basis, but not on PRs. We're gonna be bailing out a deluge for a while.

This post is unavailable.

Fellow libs, expecting to beat AI by individually refusing to use it is like trying to beat climate change by individually recycling plastic bottles. Systemic problems require systemic solutions, even though it's much easier to yap about every single time someone exists in society.
