The Wikipedia community has built a tool that makes it possible to embed our interactive Our World in Data charts right in any Wikipedia page. I have always admired Wikipedia and all the people contributing to it. And I'm very happy that our work now can get used this way!

Is #MosaicMonday a thing here? Let’s pretend it is, because this is my favorite mosaic octopus. The mosaicist, however, seems to have given up on the guilloche border halfway through. 😆 🏺 1/ 2nd-3rd c. CE. Villaquejida, Spain. #MuseoArqueológicoNacional, Madrid. 📸 me

The rollercoaster of getting a paper's data ↗ available in Zenodo repository ↘ 2GB, too big for Safari ↗ curl works ↗ files organized by figure ↘ it's only the figures ↗ there's also a code repo with a notebook ↘ nb depends on absent data files ↗ nb includes some static data ↘ not enough for plot

2019 video of Heidi the Octopus, captured by Dr. David Scheel, a professor of marine biology at Alaska Pacific University in Anchorage & aired on PBS Nature program "Octopus: Making Contact". We think the color changes are the results of Heidi dreaming as she sleeps. Let's talk about it.

Most often, people hire me to draw clean, grayscale maps of real places. But sometimes people hire me to draw fantasy maps. And every once in a while, someone will hire me to draw a fantasy-style map of a real place. They make great presents, in case you're wondering. #maps #fantasymaps

New post with @jensvb.bsky.social on the mystery behind Maple Street's spooky disappearing act, and how it's connected to Vancouver's housing shortage. Warning: there could be some time travel back to the 1970s involved, so bring your tie-dyes & bell bottoms! homefreesociology.com/2026/10/17/c...

We already have flying cars. They're called helicopters. They're really expensive and there are good reasons you have to have a pilot license and work with air traffic control to fly them. Putting jets on a sedan is not going to result in a better vehicle or transportation experience in any way.

Perfect timing, map projection lecture is this coming week, will demo this in my grad class. I love that I can make the projection point wrap around from positive to negative infinity. Just the right companion to the philogb.github.io/page/myriahe... demo that goes with the paper they're reading.

What an excellent visualization tool. I would have loved to have had this available when I used to teach cartography. hypertidy.github.io/playproj/

Haven't had time to check out cool new technology recently, but decided to try parquet and DuckDB-WASM for cheap interactive Canada-wide dot-density maps. This is running in the browser backed by remote hosted parquet. Still lots of room for improvement, but this already works quite well.

Students made their first minicomics in my intro making course - mostly standard format but this student, a first time maker(!), did something so off the charts I’m still reeling from it! & he made like 12 of them for his classmates! A paper engineering feat of flipbookery as well as killer drawing!

In light of today’s conversation on academic accommodations, I’m going to revive a thread lost to time when I deleted my Twitter profile. It’s about a bunch of academic accommodations that instructors can offer in lieu of an extension on an assignment. 🧵

Wow, yeah, what a fantastic site for both exploration and teaching, just in time for this term's lecture on Maps in a few weeks! Maybe you think you're already a map geek (a la xkcd.com/977/) - but welcome to the next level down the rabbit hole...
