A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

I'd really like to see more posts from women in the Data Viz feed that Jacque has created and maintains. You have sign up below and then use the #dataviz and 📊 tag to appear in it. I jus did a quick survey of the last 100 posts that appear there and posts by women only represent 20% of them.

I designed & coded an interactive archive of Germany’s richest people for the Manager Magazin. It started with 25 years of data and a puzzle. Which entries belong to the same person or family? A matching pipeline and a review tool for the editors made it possible. 🔗 See link in comment. #dataviz

Really like this graph, not just for what it shows but (as a dataviz designer) especially how it shows. #dataviz

The thread deriving from @mjskay.com's response to my post reminds me of good, old #dataViz Twitter. I miss this type of conversation!

Matthew Kay@mjskay.com

I think this depends on dialect and audience To me there's a definition of misleadingness (or maybe correctness) where if there are perceptual operations on a chart your audience will tend to perform and those operations do not correspond to valid data operations, arguably the chart is incorrect

The Wikipedia community has built a tool that makes it possible to embed our interactive Our World in Data charts right in any Wikipedia page. I have always admired Wikipedia and all the people contributing to it. And I'm very happy that our work now can get used this way!

Deforestation surged under Bolsonaro but slowed under President Lula da Silva. Recently published numbers by the Brazilian Institute for Space Research show deforestation fell during the past year, to its lowest rate since satellite observations began (1988). data.inpe.br/biomasbr/est... 🌴🇧🇷💚

Interesting how they inverted the scale to show a reduction in value of the real even though it means more reals per dollar. Justifiable. But that scale needed to spare a ln empty bottom third of the charting area to avoid the perception that the real went down to some baseline. 📊

Brazil's currency and stocks tumbled on Monday as investors bet that Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's comeback election victory would compound fiscal worries for Latin America's biggest economy. ft.trib.al/YFBHtNS

Also, I'm confused by this baseline. The dates don't seem to follow a normal pattern. Oct 19 is closer to Oct 12 than Oct 26, while being 7 days away from each.

The red square is the $1 trillion the Republicans cut from Medicaid (over 10 years). The green square is the $50 billion Rural Health Fund they're all so proud of (over 5 years). The blue square is the $190 million that Susan Collins is crowing about in her Maine rural health care ad.

What most people don't know: when you fill up a petrol car most of the energy never moves it. Petrol car: 13–21% of the crude oil's energy reaches wheels. Electric car on today's UK grid: 43–45%. Electric car on wind+solar: 77–80%. That's why we don't need to replace fossil energy one for one.

It's my birthday. My birthday wish is that you make something today. A sketch or a poem or a little piece of code. A cake. A joke. A clever piece of joinery. That you revel, even just for a small moment, in the act of creation. It's what we've got.

Especially sad for the dataviz community for whom SciAm has always had an outsized importance. 📊

Lisa Jarvis@lisamjarvis.bsky.social

It's been truly depressing to watch the gutting of SciAm--and of course, terrible to watch so many great journalists (and friends) lose their jobs amid the meltdown.

What proportion of chart readers can tell that wages and prices increase at every single point of both lines? 📊

President Trump says the economy is great. Americans, overwhelmingly, disagree. With early voting underway in the midterms, what does the data show? My answer, in three formats: Story: www.nytimes.com/2026/10/18/b... Podcast: www.nytimes.com/2026/10/21/p... Video: www.nytimes.com/video/busine...

That could be bad news for Democrats in a year when the Senate is decided by red states. If polling errors follow the average historic trend, Democrats' leads in Texas and Alaska could be wiped out while Iowa and Kansas move firmly into the Republican column www.economist.com/graphic-deta...

This week's Data Vis Dispatch covers protests in India 📢🇮🇳, the effects of AI on the U.S. stock market 🤖, work friendships 👥, Amazon’s high seller fees 📈, and taxing the ultra-rich 💵. Explore these topics and much more in the newly posted blog👇 www.datawrapper.de/blog/data-vi...

The virtual practice round / dress rehearsal will take place this Thursday, October 22, in the morning, Eastern Time. My own material will be in draft, incomplete. No pressure, it's practice and meant to improve. #visualisingclimate @visualisingclimate.com 📊

I’d like to offer something to fellow speakers: A virtual practice round for your talk. 🎤 I think giving a talk is a big gift of time from an audience, and I like the idea of helping each other make the most of that moment.

Seems relevant to that flood of journalists who in the last few weeks announced publicly that it was okay to return to X, that the platform had gotten better, and the worst aspects of it had been minimized. This is what you have endorsed.

Ryan Mac 🙃@rmac.bsky.social

On X, users have circulated nonconsenual AI videos created by Grok of a woman they think is Jane Doe. They continue to spread her name. People have praised X for staying relevant for AI and tech conversation. But it also is the main vector for a doxing. That is X. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/16/n...
