A serial rapist was elected twice as President, a fact we don't reckon with nearly enough. Now one of two major political parties has been molded in his image, run for and by violent sexual abusers who hate women.

Or... if you are part of an organization that wants to bring me in to teach a fun workshop about birds and data and community engagement, let me know!

TY to @craigrobertson.bsky.social for snapping this pic at Books Are Magic in Brooklyn. Craig, incidentally, is the author of The Filing Cabinet: A Vertical History of Information (among other works), which is *so* good. I assigned it to my History of the Database class and students *loved* it.

I say this is a dog owner: dog owners are the worst. No other group has such an unwavering conviction that the rules were written for someone else (with some other dog)

Ha, this reminds me in a lovely way of the beautiful viz posters @mgiraldo.mstdn.social.ap.brid.gy used to make back in the NYPL Labs days in the 2010s (these are the outlines of the largest buildings in NYC from 1854)

Happy birthday! (I sketched digitally on top of a pic of a painting I made)

It's my birthday. My birthday wish is that you make something today. A sketch or a poem or a little piece of code. A cake. A joke. A clever piece of joinery. That you revel, even just for a small moment, in the act of creation. It's what we've got.

I saw Wildwood with my son tonight and it is a masterpiece. I reveled in every single frame of it. (I had no idea it was written by Colin Meloy?)

Before forewarned that it is quite violent and generally pretty scary. But my kid is fairly sensitive to these things so I may be over judging

Did you know that in addition to one-on-one writing coaching, I do workshops? I just finished a really delightful hour with a newsroom talking about and troubleshooting strategies for writing for fun when you also write for a living; and I'd love to bring that to your org, too!

I’m still in Halloween mode but the craft stores have all jumped to the winter holidays so I guess y’all can get ready for gift giving. Especially with wrapping paper like this.

There are 402 species of parrots in the world and each of them have a feather on this wrapping paper. The colors are extracted from Wikipedia descriptions, which means they are DEFINITELY not anatomically correct but they are wonderful. jerthorp.me/wrap 🦜🪶

All of this wrapping paper ships plastic-free anywhere in the world. It's printed by a fine art print network, which means it gets made as local to you as possible. You get some really special paper, AND you're supporting all the weird work I do. www.jerthorp.me/wrap

In the grid variant of this paper, there's a little specimen tag for each species. Don't like parrots? What about hummingbirds? The names of the birds are wonderful in their own right. Violet-throated starfrontlet! Chatterling lory! Garden emerald! 💎🪶 jerthorp.me/wrap

Three years ago, my dad said that all fish are the same shape. Out of spite, I decided to draw all 478 families of bony fish listed in Nelson 2016. There's still some stuff I need to edit and some fish I want to redraw but, after 985 days, I finished my big dumb fish project last night.

I have a kid who has extreme sensory issues around soap. Getting him to wash his hands has always been a battle. We are approaching puberty FAST and I'm trying to find solutions for face washing. Any advice from folks with similar sensory issues?

This is truly great news – I've been to this corner of Arizona twice, and it's stunning. The first time I went, I stayed the night in a small cabin in a canyon and woke up surrounded by deer, skunk, hummingbirds, and other wildlife. I felt like a Disney princess.

This year I'm revisiting one of my favourite outputs from the project: wrapping paper! I've made three new pattern types for five different sets of birds in three colorways, which means that you can wrap up your gifts in 45 different types of paper! www.jerthorp.me/wrap

From 1992-2004, the Anchorage International Airport had a bar with animatronic, talking, and rather cursed-looking customers who randomly told each other bad jokes. What a world we live in. Learn the history of our replica Cheers bar in my latest article: www.adn.com/alaska-l...
