Doing anything related to Microsoft admin involves the most screamingly-awful online user experience I can ever recall. Its basically the Backrooms of the web

the idea phase is the easiest and least valuable part of professional creativity. read the first draft of the first Star Wars if you doubt me Great art is made in the grinding, often miserable collision between the ethereal substance of an idea and the mud and blood and friction of reality

In 1908, the NY Times first published a map in color. Not the classic red and blue, but it was showing the blue Democrat states in the South. Fun enough, the first time “Martians” were mentioned in the newspaper was in 1877. 👽 Check below for more “first times” at the Times.

The UEFA Conference League is back tonight, and to celebrate, I have created the world's trickiest flatpack/football crossover quiz: Ikea or Conference League! I give you a name. You tell me if it's an Ikea product or Conference League team! passmode.shop/ikea/

passmode.shopIKEA or Conference League?20 names. Each is either an IKEA product or a club from this season's UEFA Conference League. Can you tell which? Take the quiz and share your score.

⏪️ I watch a lot of sporting highlight reels on YouTube — and, for a while, I’ve been meaning to start a thread of videos that have brought me considerable joy. Today's as good a day as any to get started, so: here are a few recent favourites. (I’ll keep adding to it as things catch my eye.)

As disappointed as I am, this is probably the perfect result to sum up the sorry state of the Premier League as it stands. We’re watching a sham. The cheats still prosper.

Absolutely brilliant premise for a book and so excited to get a copy. Its the book I would have wanted to write but am so glad that Tiziana has done it instead!

Hey #datafam, I’m proud to tell you that my first book “Absent Data: Why Gaps, Uncertainty, and Invisible Data Matter” is available for pre-orders! 🔗 www.tizianaalocci.com/absent-data-... ...and to discover more: substack.com/@tizianaaloc... Stay tuned for updates, book launch parties & more!

I keep getting served this wretched ad on different sites for blood-soak-patterned tops, yet when you give feedback to say its inappropriate, a reload just brings it straight back. Not a great look for the BBC homepage to have these come up beneath a story of a pilot being stabbed.

To also highlight Akash's 'The Data Drop' weekly newsletter, which is brilliant and similarly involves a smart visual exploration of interesting slices of life: "we pick one thing and take it apart with data. A film. A sport. A market. Some strange corner of the internet" sheets.works/data-viz

This is the first public one-day/Fundamentals course I've run since December 2024, with two-day/Masterclasses being more in demand, but I thought it was long overdue to offer this length of training for those who can only get sign-off for this price and for taking one day out the office.

Whether you're new to data viz or seeking to make a leap forward in your craft, the value of training is huge. Come join my next public training event, the 1-day 'Fundamentals of Data Visualisation' taking place at Flourish HQ in London on Tuesday 24 November. visualisingdata.com/2026/09/new-...

Almost every dataset you work with has a time column, and it is still one of the hardest things to get right. Issue 6 of Nightingale Magazine is about that problem. Around twenty pieces from practitioners and researchers, in print. Ships in December 2026. Pre-order your copy: buff.ly/SFfNXgs

I know you're supposed to play the game with LinkedIn posts - use certain prose, include photos, not using so-called low-value URLs, garnering early likes/reposts - but to see a post is only getting served to 2.9% of followers (who presumably chose to follow) suggests its a fairly useless platform

Its a snapshot of what I see as the single biggest challenge for contemporary data viz/freelancers: reach. Compared to ~10 years ago - golden age of twitter, people still visiting websites, RSS content platforms - you have to work so hard to get something seen, then read, and even harder for clicks.

My firm belief (maybe naive, but still) is that there remains a vast amount interest and demand out there for design, consultancy, training, talks, commissions, but connecting a freelance supplier with the interested customer is not just different but tremendously harder than it once was.

As part of the celebration of the New York Times 175th anniversary, graphics director Archie Tse, wrote a brief story about the sketchbook he used while in Iraq covering the news of Saddam Hussein's hideout. Here [ nyti.ms/3TjBBKF ] is a list of objects that @nytimes.com's journalist can't forget.

The Guardian’s Visual & Data Journalism team is expanding! We have three exciting new roles, and we're looking for people who can help us push the boundaries of how we find, report and tell stories. 🧵⬇️

(This had previously been advertised as a 2-day 'Masterclass' training event but due to scheduling reasons has now been modified to a shorter 1-day course)

Whenever I see James Talarico I can’t not also see a Joan Cornella illustration www.artsy.net/artist/joan-...

Something remarkable is happening: James Talarico is running an expansively pro-immigrant campaign in Texas, a state Trump won by 14 points, speaking in Biblical terms about our duty to "the stranger." And it's resonating. That's seismic. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2160...

I'm not able to get over for this but its always been a vital event on the data viz conference calendar

Dear people: there are still tickets available for the Information Design Conference. On Oct 30 in Hilversum, Netherlands this conference is surely one you should visit if you are passionate about #datavisualization, #infographics and adjacent subjects. The speakers list is 💯🤩 (link in next post)
