Save the date! Thursday 5 November, 16.00-18.00, @sciencefaction.nl borrel at Vin Natuur. We will have an occasion to discuss what has happened, is happening and will happen in the university council and explore who wants to join our lists for the next council elections

In our course and book _Calling Bullshit_, we posit that If something seems too good, or too bad, to be true, it probably is. Now as a college professor I'm pretty confident that overreliance can AI can harm our thinking ability, but just ten minutes of use? Let's dig into this this study a bit.

This tracks with my experience peer reviewing heavily AI-generated papers—just crazy that it’s happening at this scale, with claims of disrupting an entire field. I feel bad for the mathematicians who have to sort through all this. They should get paid.

OpenAI’s findings have arrived in increasingly large waves, with little pause between them and frequent indications from the company that yet more are on the way. “You get a sense that they don’t really care about these individual results,” Roney-Dougal said. “It’s a really nasty feeling.”

I think the cubic shape is the *unintentional consequence* of their very long digestive process (14+ days), required to process tough roots & grasses, extracting all moisture. The cubes are just a fortunate happenstance of super-efficient distal colons. Article here:

Mr. Unthank, who lives in Italy, also programmed a fly to use a car’s blinkers when turning because he was frustrated that so few human drivers seem to use them. “That’s how easy it is,” he said. “Even a fly could do it.” 😳😳😳

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Creative internet users have taken a complete map of a fruit fly’s 166,000 neurons, published by Google, and made simulated flies do things that are pretty impressive, including solving a Rubik’s Cube, playing video games and even parallel parking a car.

It's not only Harvard. Universities worldwide have made conracts with AI companies, paying to get more tokens and/or tokens for more advanced LLMs. And yet, some people have "their" research stopped because they run out of tokens. All of this in the current times of scarce and dwindling funding.

Jed Brown@jedbrown.org

Oh. That's a heck of a subsidy.

Dancing very very VERY close to saying “OpenAI stole our almost-complete proof of Navier-Stokes from internal access to our ChatGPT sessions because they were desperate to scoop Anthropic” which is absolutely 100% a believable thing OpenAI would do right now cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/st...

I will say, it's soooo satisfying to see that entire day of meetings dissappear. Though as you progress in your career the meetings start coming faster and faster. Eventually they're gonna overflow to Saturday and it's game over.
