Mathober Day 23 - The Devil on 2 Sticks
The Devil on 2 Sticks, is a 4th-degree algebraic curve. Its shape resembles a juggling toy balanced between 2 sticks.
Randomly varying its parameters produces different shapes and proportions.

@visualpde.com Is such an awesome website. Explaining geometric Brownian motion in a lecture tomorrow, and this tool here will help me illustrate the corresponding forward Kolmogorov equation: visualpde.com/sim?mini=JOD...
New paper on (among other things) generating Cannon-Thurston maps from veering triangulations, joint work with Jason Manning and Saul Schleimer. arxiv.org/abs/2609.14598.
We also made lots of pictures of these space-filling curves, available at math.okstate.edu/people/seger...

It took more than 3,000 emails, close to 80 hours of work, and turned further hairs white, but it is great to finally hold the printed proceedings from this year's Bridges #Mathart conference in hand! Kudos to Eve Torrence (managing editor), the other editors, and the authors!
This fall I am co-teaching a brand-new class – ENGR 009: Fabricating Tessellations and Tilings. It's roughly equal parts math and design, filtered thru an engineering perspective. The syllabus and all assignments are freely available to the public at mzucker.github.io/e9_f2026/
Último artículo publicado. Me hace especial ilusión porque trata de combinar Matemáticas y Arte. El objetivo era encajar piezas de Tetris para representar imágenes conocidas.

One is never going to capture the artistry of Francis's 𝐴 𝑇𝑜𝑝𝑜𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑙 𝑃𝑖𝑐𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝐵𝑜𝑜𝑘 with mere algorithms, but I'm pretty stoked that my computer is now generating manipulatable 3d scenes that look like this. #MathSky#MathArt
Any mapping is necessarily a kind of flattening, distortions happen, information lost. "Not even the most expansive mapping can convey everything" or, to quote Alfred Korzybski, "the map is not the territory"

More New Data Art! ✨
I got to visualize a private equity firm's data as a piece of art. I can't divulge more about the what and how, but I hope you can simply enjoy how it looks ;) It's basically built of from ±15 million tiny dots.

After I broke into two-color brioche, I had a brainwave that I could do this really cool thing as a knit #cowl. It was two years before I finally made my first try, shown here. Explanation and photos to follow; keep an eye on main and background colors. 🌈

I had an amazing time at my first Math Bridges conference in University of Galway last week. There was a planar modular origami workshop, another on the calculus of cat's cradle, a maths-fashion show, an Irish dancing lesson with numerical emphasis, and a family day full of activities for young ppl
How nice! I am very pleased to announce that I have been awarded the Alternative Fields Medal award in the category of "Excellence in exposition of mathematics to a popular audience", in recognition of my books and my MathOverflow contributions.

At family day at Bridges I volunteered to help Nick Sayers with his giant pantograph. Trace the outline of the person, and a small copy is drawn by the pen. It was fun for kids and adults of all ages. Here is @ayliean.bsky.social as a model and an artist.
Next, Loe Feijs tells us about "Visual Representation of Inhibition for Phyllotaxis." (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2026/bridges...) A fascinating journey, starting from Fibonacci Numbers and sunflower shapes, taking us all the way to the "Inhibiscus" shape. (2/3)
The last talk for today is by Fahreddin Basegmez, who tells us about "Symmetries of Prime Factors." (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2026/bridges...) He presents a fascinating zoo of intricate #MathArt shape assemblies. (3/3)
Short paper session in the afternoon at the Bridges #MathArt conference has:
Marta Kopyt "Math through books", Gary Lester "Art as Math Representation", David Reimann "LEGO to communicate Math", and Chris John "Making Kolam Accessible". Wonderful ideas for playful #MathArt.
The second plenary #MathArt talk is by Claire Moriarty, who speaks about "Semiotics, Ease, and Elegance: Oliver Byrne’s Elements of Euclid." (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2026/bridges...) It is wonderful to learn about the (historical) background of this famous and richly illustrated book. (2/2)
