Big personal/professional news—we've been hoping/trying to get back to the Middle East since we left in 2010 and we're finally headed back! In August, I'll be leaving GSU and heading to Georgetown University in Qatar as an assistant professor in international politics and quantitative methods.

lol literally just taught this today

This suggests a misconception about how polls work. Polls only need a few hundred or thousand people to be statistically representative of the population.

This is exactly the principle that has fucked up everything from deli flyers to UX in billion-dollar products Once upon a time, even if you were doing something on your own, it took long enough to do that it made you think about what you were doing! You had time to think "hang on, this sucks."

I think the thing about AI and small business owners is that previously the design would have to be run past either a second person who know some amount of design, or they'd learn photoshop and some amount of design with it now they can ask the AI to do their bad design and the AI never says no

Experimenting with dehydrating my sourdough starter for some extended travel—starting by drying some out and reanimating it to see if it survives 🤞 #breadsky

Hi all! I'm looking for people to try out my new collaborative writing platform. Think: Overleaf or GDocs for Mkdown LaTeX HTML Typst Quarto Free, open source, and full-featured. Many editors, chat, comments, track changes, history, AI, mobile, templates, etc Would ❤️ any feedback! librepaper.org

including this awful one

Andrew Heiss@andrew.heiss.phd

Out of curiosity I compared the original with this revision using Acrobat→docx→track changes and it is 100% a *completely* rewritten paper, with different methods, results, theory, etc. I've never seen happen this before. Gonna contact the editors bc this is ~~wild~~

Happy to report that the other two articles I reviewed were actually really well done and I only had minimal comments for them

any statistician born after 1983 can't hand-calculate sums of squares... all they know is be Bayesian, eat hot chip & calculate marginal effects
