There is an international, well-connected network of fascists promoting far-right candidates in elections (and coups) across the world. The guy who owns the site Yglesias posted this on is one of their leaders. Be careful of people advocating for their opponents to disarm!

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

One thing I think we're going to be grappling with for the next few years is the way in which "group optimization" for things like recommendations runs up against the unsavory sense that an LLM has created the content, poisoning even the basic concept of aggregated results

Okay, so could we possibly, I dunno, say, do some investigative journalism into where the funding streams for these clearly astroturfed groups are coming from? (Spolier: it's American Christian Dominionists. The money is coming from ultra-rich American Christian Dominionists).

The problem with "artificial intelligence" as a term is not that it's "real" intelligence. Just the opposite, really.

Forbes@forbes.com

Dismissing growing concerns about AI safety, Trump has argued that “Artificial Intelligence” was a "very ineloquent" name for the technology and makes it sound "fake."

Hey, y'all. "Innocent until proven guilty" is a term intended for the court system, where a defendant isn't guilty 'til a trial finds them to be so. It doesn't mean that you don't use your own fucking common sense & good judgment to stay away from bad people. You're not imprisoning them. Thanks.

An issue with repression is the same issue people can have with persistent distracting thoughts: You try to ignore them, and your brain keeps processing the incomplete thoughts in the background. In such instances, some sort of closure is superior to trying not to think about elephants.

Gen AI is the dream of replacing the need for others without achieving personal growth or self-reliance. To be fair, many tools have similar results and can come to be depended on. It’s the extremes, scope, and specifics of Gen AI that make them cross several lines.

The expert (to me at least) has weighed in and has a good explanation for how NBC's "synced" overlay could have gotten unsynced

Alex Norris@alexnorris.com

When I watched the replay with the overlaid clock, the 1st and 10 lines were on there. They probably shouldn’t be in that case. I know nothing about NBC’s particular procedures, but on games I’ve done, recording both versions is common, since they can both be useful for different purposes.

theguardian.comThat sound you hear is not the world ending – it’s liberalism being monstered | Waleed AlyIt turns out most of us no longer believe in progress. And when that happens, it quickly becomes a crisis for societies like ours * Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast Depending on your politics, the monsters are everywhere. Perhaps you see them in the form of tech billionaires and the artificial intelligence they’re developing. Perhaps you see them in the bin fire of social media they bequeathed us before that, or the legacy media that refuse to tell you “the truth”. You might see them in the manosphere, or the institutions teaching our kids gender fluidity. Maybe you see them in the migrant youth wielding machetes in the suburbs, or the refugee attempting to behead someone on a Belfast street. Or perhaps you see them in the violent anti-immigrant mobs that torched houses in response. If so, you’ll likely see them in the Marches for Australia or to Unite the Kingdom rallies, organised by far-right groups but attended by many more besides. You’ll almost certainly see them in at least one of Hamas, Israel or those local advocates at each other’s throats over the Middle East. I suspect you’ll see them in Russia but that can no longer be assumed. And I’d guess that you’d see them in at least one political party with a significant share of the vote. Something in that paragraph probably outraged you. In which case, you’re probably seeing monsters in whoever sees different monsters from you. It would be easy here to make a point about polarisation. But I want to look at the deep disquiet that lies underneath. Continue reading...
