Back in 2013 I wrote about the inadequacy of common documentary taxonomies that were taught at the time in film school and that we needed to think more about documentary as a production mode with common features rather than trying to "read" these modes in the films.

My point was that filmmakers have always used documentary strategies to make highly stylized or staged films, & I was specifically frustrated at the way scholars at the time were carving out reality TV from documentary practice. Whether a documentary practice is ethical isn't a question of category

Made an offhand comment about how the LLM era has quickly erased useful distinctions between "impersonal" and "dehumanizing," feel like that's got more potential as an idea than the Death of Wisdom of Crowds

sort of goes for what the Cannelle album was going for but without veering too far into pointlessly harsh meta-pop, more of a semi-avant treatment of lots of Francophone diaspora pop that doesn't put it at a distance

this is also what really turned me off about the B0YG1RL & Novagang album earlier this year -- hard to describe, but I'd describe these albums as having an almost neurotic approach to global pop, like if you don't smear shit all over it it won't code as ART

I am part of the tiny sliver of venn diagram that is very excited about this

🇸🇪 Aftonbladet reports that Little Sis Nora, who provided vocals for the 2014 international platinum song "I'm an Albatraoz", will compete in Melodifestivalen 2027. Her entry is described as K-pop. More: www.aftonbladet.se/nojesbladet/...

One thing I think we're going to be grappling with for the next few years is the way in which "group optimization" for things like recommendations runs up against the unsavory sense that an LLM has created the content, poisoning even the basic concept of aggregated results

like with Taylor Swift A.I. 10-minute explainer videos or spare, professional layout, the causality is the wrong way around -- this is what the machines are trained on -- but it's an interesting source of backlash in the norms of the last decade

need to look into the sites they used -- I do think there are some house styles and tendencies in very large review sites that are way more boring and stultifying than any editorial voice of a major music publication was

Ashe album has proven divisive in my household, the two people who get excited about artful modulations prefer it to the two who do not

I don’t think you could possibly guess what this (accurate) transcription of my kid leaving a voicemail from a tablet actually sounds like

Matt Korvette of Pissed Jeans has a great newsletter where as an occasional feature he talks to musicians about what they think is their worst song, and it is always amazing. (And the songs are usually pretty good!) This week is Marissa Paternoster. yellowgreenred.substack.com/p/yellow-gre...

yellowgreenred.substack.comYellow Green Red - Worst Song #6 with Marissa PaternosterThere’s a simple reason why Marissa Paternoster was merely ranked as the 150th greatest guitarist of all time on Rolling Stone‘s “250 Greatest Guitarists” list, but few are willing to say it: Stevie R...

what I don't totally understand is why it *isn't* in Billboard's interest to keep some version of a chart with stricter recurrence rules for global music -- or at least create a separate "oldies" chart that does raw streaming numbers of music outside of a 12-month window

the only functional glimpse of global charts I can get in one place (as opposed to cobbling together dozens of data streams separately) is Kworb, a tiny passion project that is much easier to navigate than most professional chart operations.

Something like the GXU is really useful in bringing some of the local phenoms to other people's attention, but aside from being paywalled (free the GXU!), it's totally swamped by old songs

“imagine how many more songs might be on this chart [the Global 200 excluding US] if recurrence rules stopped the approximately 115 out of 200 songs that are just old songs that get big streaming numbers.”

Have said this before but doing a deep dive on '62 was fascinating to me because there very much was NOT a Beatles-sized hole in the landscape.

For fun I did a playlist of a putative Black Pop 1960-63 poll (first 20 eligible songs on Acclaimed Music basically) and it made me mad all over again that growing up I was sold the idea this was some kind of dead zone!

Am thinking about 7 for 7 for 7 because I've been revisiting Siskel & Ebert, which I watched a lot as a teenager, and find a lot of the discussion painfully conventional and much less interesting than the median peer Letterboxd review. An interesting combo of pro-intellectualism and shallow analysis

I wonder about how much discovery has changed -- think it's very hard to do an apples to apples comparison. When I was renting 7 MOVIES for 7 DOLLARS for 7 DAYS I really did just go off of a big virtuous list, and I developed knowledge that maybe 1% of people I knew could follow along with
