we've created a no AI notice to reassure people seeing our trailers and games with hand drawn lettering and a relaxing cute fox, and it's also up on itch in multiple formats* for anyone to use: eniko.itch.io/cute-fox-no-... *with/without fox, transparent/opaque, in 4k, 2160p, 1440p, 1080p, and 720p

I'm actually looking at some of the Half-Life 1 view models and it's kind of crazy how these are textured. Lots of separate textures, most of them non-powers of 2 It goes completely against everything I was taught and learned about 3D art, but after some thought makes complete sense for the context

Well then. After looking at some world models and enemy models it seems that they also use non-power of 2 textures as well.

The first because it helps minimize the amount of unused texture space taking up the very limited VRAM of 90's PCs (basically the same thing that UDIMs in the CGI space are used for) The second because these are only ever meant to be seen up close so they don't need to mip-map.

I feel like more and more people are getting weirdly hung-up on there needing to be some kind of lore explanation or justification for why a new thing made for a sequel isn't in the previous games.

Game industry - don't tell me you liked my video - I don't care - get the fuck off twitter This election cycle Elon Musk doubled his contributions to around 1/2 billion dollars including for some of the most vile ads - he gave $5m to a Vivek PAC for instance He is limiting Starlink to aid Russia

So bizarre finding a job listing for 3D Environment art, with "build and maintain gameplay systems," and "create and work with metahumans" in the job responsibilities.

The full team was like 1000 people. People outside of the “core team” did some major heavy lifting. This is outsourcing. What you are doing is outsourcing and then downgrading their contributions. There is nothing innovative about this.

Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg

Today: "Billionaire former dev whose engineering firm has been mismanaged to the point it has to vibe-code a launcher takes offense at AI-critique of popular developer that every developer that started since 2015 or so adores; Elon Musk gets involved to support the side that is obviously wrong."

If you dislike AI please stop saying AI can code now. Just because it can generate code that works for some loose definition of the word works doesn't mean it can code because coding is so much more than that. Please, I'm begging you, you do not, under any circumstances, gotta hand it to them

I’m sorry but this “core team” stuff has reached a level of absurdity. You can’t say this shit about a game that used hundreds of contractors.

ARE YOU A 3D MODELER WHO LIKES MODELING SIMPLE ANIME CHIBI HAIR? CAN I PAY YOU TO DO IT FOR ME? I have way too much on my todo list, and hoping to find someone help lighten my load a bit and take care of this task for me!

Replying to @deswalsh.bsky.social

I have people who follow me who iv unfollowed due to them being ok with ai with game dev and this why I think very little of you. We all have to breathe this fucking air and I would like less generators going so you cannot pay people or put less effort in.

The devs who say they need to use genai to code a little faster should know they are helping to normalise tools that physically harm others. There is so many costs many will just not think about but it’s there and why I’m not going to suport your games if your using it.

My god. A Virginia data center ran backup diesel generators full blast for 24 hours, creating a giant cloud of toxic smoke that choked its human neighbors. The government claimed there was nothing they could do.

32 years ago today, we held the launch party for DOOM II at the Limelight in NYC, a former church. Happy birthday to DOOM II, but also, happy birthday to the Super Shotgun, the be-all and end-all of many a monster.

The bad part about me wanting to make a game with strafe jumping/bunny hopping is that I can't actually test if it's working myself. I just never got the hang of doing it despite the hundreds of hours I have in Half-Life and other games that allow it

this seems to be an increasingly common story wrt art/games made w ai - authors are ashamed, but not enough to keep em from making the thing/showing it off. take it from someone dumb enough to be a game dev: you need to make work whose process is something you take pride in or you will eat yourself

Rebekah Valentine@duckvalentine.bsky.social

I'm sharing this as a mea culpa, because it turns out this game was coded with Claude, a fact that is reasonably difficult to track down for a piece that was intended as nothing more than a quick, fun "hey look at this" kind of thing.

"AI lets you focus on the higher level ideas!!" because we all grew up dreaming of becoming managers and CEOs we all know the real artists at the very highest level are the shareholders, famously full of amazing ideas

It's so funny whenever someone pops into a programming community with "My code isn't working right, what could have went wrong? By the way, I let AI write most of it for me" Gee, I wonder what went wrong.

I'll still continue work on my own engine project because it's fun, but it's really cool to see someone else accomplish basically what I wanted to with mine, just in a different programming language.

man i hate when someone (even an ai hater) starts saying/warning that it's actually very competent in some particular area now because all it means is they identified an area where their personal bar for competency is low. the shit isn't good for anything there's just things you don't mind being bad
