I'm convinced that the reason for routine firings in the video games industry is not about improving the balance sheet for investors, rather suppressing wages and by extension the organisation necessary for unions. As a class, studio owners want a precarious labour market to keep wages down.

For anyone who doesn't know, the cost to re-register .com addresses is going up by a dollar a year on November first; if you can afford to, you can save money in future by renewing your registration now. Also, do a search for "[dns provider you use] renewal promo code" first. I just saved 25%.

Sending DMCAs through Cloudflare then later following up with the hosting provider to get them enforced when the infringing party inevitably ignores them is tedious, but I do take pleasure in seeing the websites go offline because their provider doesn't want the legal liability to pass to them.

ladies, is your programming - a field dominated by rich white men - driven by fashion trends - practiced as a demonstration of status - funded by vanity projects for failsons - filled with queers trying and failing to break even that's art, sorry

Nyek London@stupidhoroscope.bsky.social

I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Ironically, one of the genuinely good use cases for LLMs is finding software vulnerabilities during testing. Instead, because we gave control over technological development to the biggest fraudsters, misogynists, and sick freaks on the planet, it'll be used to tear down the common good.

It doesn't have to be this way. We could socialise research and investment, and establish a regulatory framework that requires harm assessment and certification before introducing new technical innovations. We don't have to be perpetually beholden to the monsters of Silicon Valley.

The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

One day...

there’s something about holding your work in print in person that just makes it even more real anyways I haven’t stopped crying over having the anthology in my hands for yet another comic that I collaborated with my gf on 😭😭😭 thank you to @wildstarpress.bsky.social for having us !! #comics

In addition to not being a monolith, the majority of 'fans' of a work are not creatives with an understanding of *why* the work is good. They think they like something for reasons wholly unrelated for why they do. They don't have good ideas, nor do they know how to dramatise their ideas.

If there's a lesson to take from the LLM 'AI' paradigm it's that consumers are not creators: the act of creation involves a skillset with a process that's bigger and more intricate than the final product. Unless you've learned to wrestle with a creative *medium,* you don't understand its *media.*

This isn't quite true. The issue is it creates huge background noise that new talent needs to find a way to rise above if they're to have a chance. Industry looks fine on the surface, but I'm concerned about prospects for new authors longer term.

AI Slop games are going to have the exact same effect on the games industry that AI slop books have had on the book industry. Practically none, it's just a bunch of garbage being tossed in a void never to be looked at again. The actual issues will arise when it comes time to clean up the mess.

I really do think Valve needs to step in here and stop their market imploding. It's one thing to allow anyone to make a fame with no real quality control, it's another to let vibecoded slop ripping off work of real developers flood the platform. If they don't act, they'll lose the golden-egg goose.

making a game for a horror gamejam 2 days of progress so far and we're LOCKED THE FUCK IN #gamedev

I played the original Civ once, and in late game found a primitive civilization stuck on a tundra island with no development due to lack of resources. I was their first contact, gave me a real existential moment... Later, while they were still bronze age, India nuked them.

bakoon@bakoon.bsky.social

playing a game of civ thinking "i am an isolationist techno utopia. these fools are rolling in the mud together while i am ensconced in the work of the academy" and the next turn the game throws up the list of most advanced civilizations and you are the donkey idiot at the bottom

Repost if $30k would change your life right now

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

I don't think $30k is a life-changing amount of money. Median American born in 1980 will have $2m in income in their lifetime. It's a 1% increase in earnings.

I remind myself that the trans panic exists because people who resent having to do emotional labour to tolerate their 'social inferiors' were deliberately given permission to be their worst selves by the ruling class, in the hope it would create a distraction from all the wealth-stealing.

Becoming convinced that cis people don’t hear themselves speak, that loud music that plays in their heads the moment they open their mouths, or they would surely horrify themselves with the cruelties they describe as cheerily and dismissively as if they were dictating a shopping list.

Figures like the MP in question see trans people as their inferiors and believe they should be treated as inferiors. It's really that simple. To them, trans people are their lessers, and having to grant them even token dignity is an affront to their status. And status is their whole world.

A reminder. I’m not kidding when I say if you are still a little bitch who can’t give up twitter - fuck you. Like really. Fuck you, you selfish piece of shit. Musk has spent almost $400m on this election alone spreading hate and fear and you fuckers are like - this might work out… fuck you.

You know what union members famously love? Being condescended to by leadership, especially when it's to justify the leadership selling them out. Join the IWW.

We understand the strength of feeling this AI Charter has provoked & that more explanation is needed. We will publish a blog tomorrow detailing why, in a vacuum of regulation, this charter demands more transparency & accountability from organisations on how they are using AI now and in the future.

Legally, I am very constrained in what I can say about this. Let's try: I don't anticipate the programme will provide a fair representation of her views by quoting verbatim from key statements she has made on the subject of trans people and rights. I suspect there will be critical omissions.
