NEW: DSA's National Political Committee passed two resolutions today aimed at Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman, beginning processes that could result in DSA-LA being forced to rescind its endorsement of her this weekend and/or Raman herself being expelled from DSA by January.

To all Abundancebros what do you think the New Deal and Western European social democracy were except for "make-work jobs," that's kinda how productive unionism is supposed to work

Sam@samd.bsky.social

TWU be like “Hochul is MAGA because she doesn’t support our MAGA union” in reality, they’re just mad at Hochul because she refused to expand the union’s expensive handouts and make-work jobs funded with taxpayer $$

When "social efficiency" eclipses "people's livelihoods" I think you need to have another read of Seeing Like a State

Or Security, Territory, Population but I doubt many of you have read that in the first place

Is this why I've never been able to work productively with the open-weight Chinese models? 95% of my workflow is talking to the model

hailey@hailey.at

deepseek 4.1 flash is a great model (approaching excellent) so long as you never EVER have to talk directly with it

Israel is really a nationalist ethnostate, intent on protecting its landed & propertied classes, which uses a necessarily diasporic religion as part of its national mythos? You're telling me this now for the first time

Here is the Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs, spreading the antisemitic conspiracy theory that the Soros family are the puppet masters behind the election in Brazil yesterday. The Israeli Minister of Diaspora Affairs seems to see it as his job to make the Diaspora less safe.

I do respect Matt Yglesias for being a classical liberal in the true sense, in that he would watch untold horrors unfold throughout the world and simply sigh and say “ah well, we must follow what wins I suppose”

I mean, no, right? Machine translation still cannot capture Benjamin's aura, nor does it participate in Derrida's impossibility of translation

valgrind@tech-val.bsky.social

i remember in our classes human-level machine translation was treated as basically this impossible-to-achieve Holy Grail of the field and now it just exists

Just like machine-produced texts are not texts in the same way that human-produced texts are (see: novels, films, arguments, etc.), something which is not/less true for code, machine texts cannot participate in the process of differance because their vector space model of language is synchronic

Or at the very least when it's diachronic, it is only diachronically synchronic

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

on some level, this is just a form of anti-politics.

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

‘Wicker’ stars Alexander Skarsgård as a man made entirely of wicker, complete with a rock-hard wicker dick. But what about splinters? Bacteria? Degradation? Would it be advisable, from a sexual-health perspective, to mount a basket dick? We asked a gynecologist: vulture.visitlink.me/DNQwX5

At least originally the whole appeal of an Airbnb ime is that it's cheaper. I can usually find a motel for $50-75/night, but when I can't Airbnb almost always has something

Patrick Monahan@pattymo.com

For a big group trip an Airbnb makes sense but otherwise I’ve never understood the appeal vs. a classic hotel, particularly when the costs are even remotely close

It's far easier to load DPS trays and packages onto the side tray than the LLV, and it has headroom adjustments that make it easy to see over the hood for both minimum and maximum heights. As anyone else who's driven LLVs and two-tons will know, this addresses LLVs' chronic pain and safety issues

Why does intention matter at all here? The result is the point!

Eugene Vinitsky 🍒@eugenevinitsky.bsky.social

The likeliest explanation, by far, for No Kings having their account suspended by Meta is an automated policy generating some kind of false positive. This is much likelier than "Meta intentionally acting out against No Kings for...90 minutes on a random weekend"

Agree with this (although it necessitates a re-negotiation of the term "manipulation") and the two scenes that illustrate it the most are that where she describes the original Theranos device and that where she fails to understand Who's On First

I find it so strange when people don’t understand why not everyone always feels like entertaining this premise but it happens a lot on here in these conversations

at some point i started feeling like i was stupid for entertaining the ideas in the space instead of examining the specific social forces involved. the ideas are clearly not actually driving.

my explanation for why this is a big deal is that it is actually a theological dispute concerning the apocalyptic beliefs common in the ai industry and specifically that roon and nick are trying to pull influence from the specific cult in berkeley

Colin@colin-fraser.net

yeah I don't really get it, can someone explain why people are making such a big deal about this? It seems the primary thrust is "I used to think polysemanticity arose for one reason but now I think it's because of another reason" which might matter to people who know what polysemanticity is but

Do these charts always compare on API pricing, because if so there's basically no way to compare models if you're a person with a normal amount of money looking to spend no more than $20/mo

Modern-day ontological monists accuse non-monists of believing in "magic". We need more Heraclitus-lovers than Parmenides-supporters

mr. TIM@timkellogg.me

the subtext behind, “it’s just linear algebra,” is that consciousness is magic and you can’t make magic from non-magic

My "everyone needs to read more philosophy *now*" horse has been thoroughly beaten

I see people say this all the time and I think it’s just wrong in general. I don’t think you can make human skin out of pebbles. This is not because I think human skin is magic and pebbles are non-magic. I just think you can’t, in general, make everything out of everything.

i think if you want to make the world better you have to start by understanding it, and that means--to be blunt--fucking charts, because large data sets and careful studies are one of the ways you escape the mind-prison known as "my gut tells me this is true, shut the fuck up"
