This account isn't exactly unobvious, but people are not perceptive. we planned to have articles and guest writers and write about tech and its harms, particularly when its worst harms are justified with the fear of "the pedophile". You may be seeing the vision now. the vision is dead. we are dead.

i think everyone getting mad are just cowards who are scared to directly say they think the transphobic policies are good
I think people intuitively understand that democratic candidates tossing trans kids to the wolves is not only morally repugnant but also politically ineffective, otherwise they wouldn't freak out every time someone said they weren't voting for a democrat who did this

The eMudhra intermediate CA compromise broadly impacts the atproto ecosystem. At this point lots of software has been patched, and we recommend upgrading if you run a distribution of the relay, pds, jetstream, or use the goat CLI. For general information see the site linked below, otherwise read on.

🚨 Six WebPKI Intermediate CAs are compromised. This is bigger than Heartbleed, but a client-side issue. Anything that verifies certificates against public roots, like most TLS clients, is/was affected. Details, live test, patched versions and workarounds at emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com Act now.

all atproto server-side apps/services: you are affected. - pds: service proxying is outbound tls requests - firehose consumers: tls to relays/jetstream - relays etc: tls to pdses, plc - identity resolution: tls to plc and did:web hosts - etc if you only ship code to the browser, you are ok.

i want everything i own to have a computer in it, but i want that computer to be MY computer
I want more computer but I want to see less computer. I want my fridge to be smart but I don't want it to show me ads. I want my robot to clean my floor but I don't want it to connect to us-east-1. I don't want pop-ups on my phone. I don't want to "see what's new". I want my tools to do their jobs.

Honestly I want to live in the world that a lot of people quoting this seem to live in, where when the people at your work are doing fantasy football and you say "no I don't like football", there's no social cost
can’t think of a better example of AI being mostly a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist also it can’t help when this is your user base

there’s one true answer but it’s the correct one five minutes after game of thrones - the last true monoculture show - ended, we all collectively agreed not to talk about it again, and house of the dragon/knight of the seven kingdoms haven’t recaptured a fraction of that cultural presence
What TV show got so bad it effectively destroyed your appreciation for the show when it was was good?

The thing about copyright maximalists is that they always want *more* copyright. Existing copyright isn’t enough. Nothing is enough. Any recognition of the commons, any transformation of existing work is offensive to them. Free society itself is offensive to them. You cannot please them.
This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

They would unironically say that and then we would see harebrained conspiracy theory books hit NYT Best Sellers. Clearly anyone can write a book. The large group consensus with actual references has a better sniff test. Someone needs to Netflix doc how all of that was just audience capture.

the whole wikipedia hatred thing when i was growing up as a kid and having all my teachers say this to me was so bizarre. like, as a kid understanding a bit of how wikipedia worked i didnt understand why they would say that large-group consensus was bad but single publisher consensus was good

This is, I think, where we have some societal disconnects. Plumbers used to go to the local library to look up pipefitting books if they didn't already have the trade manual. Plumbers went to the library. Throughout my career I have been paid to monetize accessing information like that.
it is really hard to not hold this position whenever i was able to build a career for myself with absolutely zero education in the field. i didn't have to buy any books, pay for any classes. everything that i know was learned through free information that was accessible to me starting at the age 10
