An answer to a question, but this subthread deserves to be a top-level post. Boosting it in hope that both my followers read it.

Well start with the basics. What do you want out of an athletics program for children? Is that any different from what you want out of professional athletes? What has the actual science said about the advantages trans people might or might not have in athletic competition?

It turns out that choosing the lesser of two evils is, in fact, a moral imperative. And some folks want to wait for the Revolutionary Perfect, but I would equally challenge them to demonstrate a single time where a 'start from nothing, year-0' revolution has turned out well for most people.

While very little of what the new UK porn bans talk about are things I'm into, I'm still uncomfortable with the idea. Consenting adults playing with fantasy with other consenting adults - that's not an area I think the law should be wandering into.

I used to set my alarm to NPR news, and lie there for several minutes half-awake and semi-aware, then wonder later how much of what I remembered was true. Best example: "Wait, did they just say my lab-mate from grad school won the Nobel Prize in physics?" Spoiler: Yes they did.

thinking about how i used to have an alarm clock radio tuned to the indie station and one morning it elected to wake me up with the song Random Rules by the Silver Jews, arguably the crawl-under-the-covers-and-hope-you-suffocate-to-death-est song of all time

A labmate in grad school told the story of getting fired from the McDonalds in Golden Gate Park after 3 days. Joke’s on them; he went on to win a Nobel Prize.

Ho boy, do I have a story for you. The question of how ice breaks has been central to glaciology for well over a century.

Glen@gergyl.bsky.social

Didn't know this was especially controversial. Unsupported vertical ice obviously has a structural limit, determined by the distribution of internal fractures, especially ~vertical ones. Vertically fractured ice becomes a column crushing problem. Details are what's not known, and consequences?

Hey @adrianboafo.bsky.social! This is why we're filling in the bubble next to your name in MD05! Don't let us down.

What I want from the next Democratic administration is to put as many of these people in jail as possible. What I want from the upcoming Democratic majority is constant investigations that exposes as much of their criminal activity as possible for the next Democratic DOJ to use in indictments.

You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

Hey, I’m just asking questions. Ignorant questions, bigoted questions, questions that have been repeatedly answered for many years. Sorry, but I’m not listening to answers right now; I’m far too busy asking questions. It’s called being intellectually curious.

BREAKING: A federal judge has ruled for the first time that a Flock search was unconstitutional and violated a woman's Fourth Amendment rights. Oklahoma cop pulled over a woman and searched her in Flock "because he saw her license plate was from California" www.404media.co/federal-judg...

All of this. I also want to add that, in my research, I found that a lot of “inconsistencies” in a victim’s story actually came from gender bias affecting investigators’ record keeping and interview methods.

Just a reminder that people don’t always realize they were raped in the immediate aftermath. It can take hours, days, months, and even years to realize you were raped, and it doesn’t make it any less true. There are many kinds of responses, including fawning and trying to appease your rapist

I'm especially fond of this one she did of The Bear busking in my kitchen in Norfolk in 2013. The Bear was always "The Bear", NEVER "Bear". That would have been a very different cat. (People who still call him the latter tend to be people who followed the Twitter account but never read about him.)

Andy Beshear has an entire chapter in his new book about backing the LGBTQ community and it's worth a read. He talks about how the anti-trans ads were tested in KY during his election and how vetoing anti-trans legislation didn't hurt his reelection campaign.

I’ve been thinking about the Cornell rape all day. And I have to say, there are very good men in my life, many of them, who are confident and would have stepped in. And I also have to say I think something men and women need to reckon with is that those men are the exception.
