Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

Could we rebrand "stockpile a few days' worth of essential supplies if you can" as "form a mutual aid starter pack"? Would some of you be happier then? (Yes, I get that not everyone can; maybe that's why folk who can should.)

Yes the glimpse of daylight before work is absolutely worth being plunged into abyssal darkness at tea time.

Halloween is near! It's time to post this marvellous articulated #Roman skeleton, presumably meant to be a reminder to enjoy life to the fullest, since pleasure ends irrevocably with death. In Petronius’ Satyricon, the host of a dinner party brings out a small skeleton with moveable...🧵 1/2

This has the potential to be the next EVENTIN, according to SeaNews below, false flagged shadow fleet tanker MYRA has sent out a distress signal while being hit with storm level winds.

Aside from the difficulties carving them, the smell of a Halloween tumshie gently warmed by a candle for a few days is something else...

Scotland, too (although the NMI’s Ghost Turnip is in a league of its own). They’re an absolute bastard to carve, requiring multiple stabbings with potato peelers to core out the neep. This is “Hallowe’en”, oil on canvas, c.1911, by William Stewart MacGeorge (1861–1931) artuk.org/discover/art...

Ondřej Surý fixed PHP. Open source is completely wild.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

This ongoing badge-based pishing contest made me realise i really should get badges made for my next projects

I see your Norfolk horse and I raise you a disarticulated Oxfordshire horse (albeit without plastic heads on wooden poles)

Even in the late 80s / early 90s I was accused of faking being left handed by teachers, albeit gently "Are you sure you wouldn't like to try writing with your right hand?" I can now write terribly with either hand.

I am once again bemused by this- aren't the differences and continuities better explained by geography than cultural traditions? The Danish sites used as a comparison are very coastal, adjacent to some of the richest inshore fisheries in the world, but the English sites are at least a day inland.

The approval of the Jackdaw gas field is an environmental catastrophe. But also, side-eyeing this from an industry which has lost THIRTY THOUSAND JOBS in the past five years, what the absolute fuck is this justification?

Leo Hickman@leohickman.carbonbrief.org

From the govt's press release: "The developer estimates that Jackdaw will create 27 new direct jobs and safeguard 273 existing jobs that would otherwise be lost." Odd that so much is made about this being good for jobs. Your nearest out-of-town supermarket likely generates more jobs.

🚨 BREAKING: The UK Labour Government have approved the Jackdaw gas field. This a devastating betrayal of future generations. Jackdaw will make the UK even more dependent on the global gas market. This will do nothing to lower household energy bills and it is dishonest to pretend that it will.

Swivel-eyed Islamophobic headbanger Melanie Phillips has been on BBC Question Time 31 times, with 23 of those appearances being after she published this, which in a sane world would have been the end of her career (yes, of course it was the in the Daily Heil, what made you ask?)
