it’s kind of funny that i’m no longer really that pessimistic about AI in the context of software engineering as a discipline, but over the last couple months i have become more pessimistic about the people in charge of existing software companies than i think i have ever been in my life.

skyking reposted

I don’t know how people could say that programming and art are completely different disciplines when both workflows involve going ‘This will never work, I’m a failure’, changing one thing, then thinking you might be the smartest person alive

Many workplaces have adopted a discourse of empowerment met by just increasing productivity pressures, and what you get is people being told their skills are still valued while practically being shown they aren’t. Asking engineers to reimagine their work isn’t something they can do in isolation.

When the government queries a massive database for a small amount of responsive data, what exactly is "searched," constitutionally speaking? The whole digital haystack? Just the needle? Courts are divided. I offered my take in this recent article: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers....

okay okay on the one hand i think this is a little rude but on the other hand if your revealed preference is you will totally shell out extra $$$ for convenience and the model picks up on that it feels more harmonious with reality than the alternative doesn’t it?

You asked AI for the cheapest flight. It dug through your emails, decided you could afford more, and suggested a ticket costing $100–$200 extra. Lindsay Owens explains ⬇️

i’m not saying that it’s wrong to be chagrined here but it i offer the machine a peek into my soul and it acts according to what it (probably quite reasonably!) infers then you know what that’s on me, i put that stuff there in the first place!

I grew up in a lower income immigrant family and we ate at Red Lobster for "special days." But we also understood the White House should not look like the inside of Red Lobster. It's condescending to assuming working ppl are culturally illiterate bc their experience is shaped by their limited means.

actually to sincerepost for a moment, i think the project of a "best of" anthology is kind of herculean, and i love the angle that joe takes on it re: idea-forward SF. so pls consider supporting it and buying a copy for urself or to hand to ur most ideapilled friend :)

coming to the realization that my generation is not going to age any more gracefully, as a collective, than any of the other generations that have preceded us and it’s going to be real unpleasant to see it happen just on a personal level.

there is already so much boomerslop (millennial) there is going to be /so much/ millennialslop in 30 years and i think it will just be psychologically unpleasant like doing bad drugs or something

standing in the middle of my org chart and yelling “STPA” like some elaborate call & response to find the three or four sane people in any moderately sized software engineering company.

Turns out the friction of having to learn photoshop was a crucial firewall protecting society from the terrible taste of small business owners

When I first heard about AI being used for menus and advertisements, my concern was largely that it would be used to idealize the food and make it look better than it actually was. At no point did I imagine that restaurants would willingly put out horrific looking images of their food on purpose

do I have any SRE or, if I'm lucky, LIS friends with recommendations for postmortem databases? actual no-shit info ontology and faceted search support would be lovely, unfortunately this is another area where vendors appear to aggressively ignore Theory

if you use Haskell, Nix, or Rust it is your professional obligation to ostracize these people in any way shape or form that you have the capacity for. if you work for Anduril you are less than dirt; if you take their money you are a pathetic, disgusting loser.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

To "revel in the death of those who truly deserve it...is normal, good, and aligned with our natural and national order," Anduril co-founder Palmer Luckey wrote on X.

i have my reservations about the impact of weapons development at primes like Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman, but i was at a wedding this weekend with a bunch of engineers who work for them and every single one of them hated Anduril for just and moral reasons.

not the jealous hatred of a cool startup competitor, genuine actual moral disdain that i have struggled to find from people in the software industry. when Lockheed guys think Luckey deserves [TOS violation] it makes it that much worse to see Anduril get glazed by my industry peers lemme tell ya!
