holy shit discord putting out an update to make "discoverable servers" searchable via search engines without needing to login, finally there won't be stupid amounts of hidden information trapped in some random server anymore can't wait to see stupid drama on this lol

people will still complain but it's specifically "discoverable servers" which require over 1000+ people and are already public (with an account), with channels *and* individual users allowed to opt-out of their content being available online

i think this is a really good change for issue of "answer stuck in a server you're forced to join to find" and if people are mad at this they're admitting they can't read 2 sentences of an announcement

it's actually out now but i still don't understand the point of it... it's basically a niri rice on cachyos but the rice doesn't even look like their aesthetic on the website. it's just rounded corners, blur, and gradients that look kinda nice attached is their video from twitter

i got emailed to try out the pond preview distro and the installer is just so cutie... i really like the boot animation and such but the desktop itself feels a bit lacking that same charm, it's just serif font + nice blur that's not unixporn-like instead of the cute animations...

also they don't have an option for FDE during setup which i feel like is a weird exclusion... it's not that hard to setup basic FDE w/ a password

anyone got a fips compliant VPN that can do device attestation and ensure 24 hour reauth periods with MFA login? you have no idea how badly i wish i could use tailscale with this, yes i'm know the fips page in the documentation (we require fips), yes i know about wolfssl (no gui clients)

winter@madoka.systems

i really wish i didn't have to worry about security compliance, this shit sucks. everything is either old and deprecated, not technically compliant but far better to everything else, or not properly supported software wise so we can't use it

> If Tailscale traffic is wrapped in FIPS-validated encryption (such as TLS termination or IPsec), it may be considered compliant. oh god i could do dual vpns couldn't i? i think an auditor would panic upon seeing "MFA non fips vpn wrapping a fips one with no MFA" though

i also hate not being told all of the parameters for things and then getting told i should've done something different despite me literally not being told to do so before

i wonder just how long i'll have to be on the steam frame waitlist for in order to get one...

i had this idea of putting wordle scores as atproto records a bit ago, i even got a whole domain for it, but i kinda just never made it into anything... i was planning to make a whole wordle clone but i didn't really want to do that and not doing that felt lame

i do wonder if it's more worth it to build a wordle clone that uses the official list of words or if it's better to simply parse the shared scores

i fucking hate that vibecoding is the only way i can actually do anything with programming. i'm actually so fucking pathetic. i don't deserve to call myself a developer by any metric, i'm just not comparable

winter@madoka.systems

they should hire me despite me not really knowing any programming languages because i'm really good at doing anything. i do know how to configure and manage systems really well though so i have that skill... i'm trying to ignore the fact that specific skill set is entirely replaced with ai now...

actually not even just taildrop, how is linux tailscale generally still in the state that it is now? there's a couple unofficial wrappers for the client to provide a tray icon and such (none of them really work right) and it needs a root running daemon to work? that feels so weird to me

winter@madoka.systems

tailscale's taildrop feature could be so awesome to use instead of anything else for moving files but it feels so cumbersome on linux... what do you mean everything else just nicely goes into your downloads and linux requires you to open a terminal to do `tailscale get .`?

the root daemon can be excused because it needs to access the tun device, sure, but it's still confusing how you specifically need to set a single operator as the true "user" for tailscale. it just feels odd to me while on windows and macos you install it and it works without any hacks

kind of upset that things are moving more towards "make 20 billion half-baked features" rather than "make existing features better for everyone" but i suppose that's just to be expected for a VC startup

i get that it's "in alpha" but it's also been out for over 2 years at this point and it hasn't felt like anything has happened to it and tailscale is instead focusing on other parts of it...

kinda sad that there probably won't be a good federated chat protocol again. irc was good for the time, xmpp was killed because big companies stopped integrating with it, matrix was never good but it's the most modern option, and the atproto based ones might be good but it isn't a messaging protocol

i'm sure the average person here would like other people to move here, i've also done this, but the reality is no one that isn't a nerd or posting purely left-wing political slop is moving here. "but you're support the csam machine!" 300M DAU vs 20M DAU, if you want any users you stay on the "bad"

ig for this last one, there are some artists cross posting here so that's neat, but not all of them are going to care about putting stuff here idk, i wish that people would move to more open and free things but it turns out the billions of dollars spent to ensure people stay on a platform work

"oh you'd have data portability" who cares? "you'd have federated identity!" what is that? that sounds like a nerd thing "big companies don't control your data" hate to say it but the average person will not give up something because of privacy, even if they know it's bad

like are you really going to say to someone "get off of instagram/twitter/snapchat/facebook/reddit/tiktok because they sell all of your data and can delete your account any time!" and seriously think that someone is moving platforms?

idk, in order to have any meaningful adoption you have to be able to make a good use case to "the normies" as much as i hate that word. what compelling reason is there for people to move away from whatsapp, telegram, signal, facebook messenger, etc.? "$current_app works fine for me!

if you care about the crease in a folding phone's screen, you honestly should just not get a folding phone. it's impossible to get rid of it and anyone telling you different is trying to sell you their phone

like has anyone forgotten about the wild claims people would make of intel macbooks that their speeds/temps aren't that bad? like apple has not broken thermodynamics or physics, stop glazing them because they made a nice looking phone on the show floor

if we're friends youre allowed to grope my tits at hangouts whenever you feel like really. i made them pretty and easy to grab for that reason ysee? if your eyes are wandering and you wanna pinch my piercings under my shirt from behind im doing my job right

if the world was all nerds, everyone would have a server that ran things like a PDS and services for their home and nothing would be maintained or really work right because everyone would use different versions of everything with different patches, the only thing that still work is IRC and email

i kind of wonder how possible it is to fine-tune an either transcription model or very small OLM that does cleanup only, like S1-mini, and to make that fine-tuned on all of your typing styles for various things (like emailing coworkers and messaging friends as two separate models)

I should vibecode my own transcription software and AI client for my Operating System Of The Future... aka i kinda just want a hotkey where i can point a model at an image and get good alt text for it but idk if there exists a purpose built model for that

oh fuck, you could totally do some kind of sync thing type thing where you move the model between devices oh fuck, you could even do parametric memory systems too... I don't know if that's really applicable to a transcription model, but it'd be funny if you could do that

that specific model I linked is only a fine-tune of.. I think it's 0.6B qwen? so it'd probably be pretty possible to do that on device, even with the CPU, pretty fast. like, I'm even guessing you could fine-tune on a phone, and that'd be perfectly fine

oh also a translation interface on device?? save me?? maybe one that's transparently able to do OCR into the translation model? maybe i'm able to actually use the NPU on modern computers? maybe it's not just "we have an llm for all of this smile"? many tiny models for tasks instead of a big one?

i really wish that you could not own a smart tv in today's world, but the only way you can do this is by getting a tv that's designed for commercial services and 24/7 operation with a shit picture...

or not connecting it to the internet at all but i really don't like that the tv still takes forever to do trivial things such as switching inputs and such, also many many people still connect their tv to the internet because they use youtube on it or something death to closed source IoT

the way my boss can sap any interest i have for a topic so quickly should probably be studied...

forgive me for being evil and incorrect: i don't really like streetcat that much,, it's just not as good as some of the other songs on the album

i should make my own version of pond with blackjack and hookers (more security + ai tooling)

i think that infinite canvas views for things should be more popular wow this is fucking awesome, i love having my bad habits reinforced via 4 chats going
