hello foodsky, I am enjoying a bowl of gyudon++ this evening. like C++ it is not necessarily a strict improvement to add shredded cabbage and a sliced shiitake to a classic, comforting, and charmingly simple beef bowl, but unlike C++ I have no regrets 🍽️🍜

He’s battling Galadriel constantly, Gandalf seemingly a lot, Denethor a fair amount (who is obviously subverted but seems to hold his own for a bit), Aragorn sometimes, even Frodo for a bit

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

We proved that "No one watches women's sports!🤡" Was always a lie. We proved that women's sports are not just the pink version of men's sports. We proved that when you put the mic in front of women, they have interesting things to say, and that we can all learn from them.

i remember being excited to hear we had an expensive legal liability at a past job, because it meant we had budget to fix it without complaints about cost ops were fighting uphill against these problems for a generation before ai ai just gave us the motive and the means to fix it at the same time

Arrdem@arrdem.tirefireind.us

Agents aren't leading to there being a plethora of problems, there were already TONS of wild defects, some a decade or more out there undiscovered because human-written software is terrible and the industry hasn't been punished for quality/security failures in a meaningful way ever!

The number of fucking times some staff in a medical office has called something unbelievable a "bug," whether real or not software itself is an accountability sink.

A good demonstration of how absurdly small insects can get. I was looking at a relatively small (2.5 mm) pteromalid wasp and noticed something stuck to its wing. It was an even smaller wasp.

having a very "oh, you're concerned about poor-quality LLM output? walk me through your practices for evaluating query plans" morning (it has been bad for decades, SWEs just got used to shoveling the bad onto ops)

A thing that annoys me about the "attacker" analogy in InfoSec is that it suggests to a nontechnical audience that attacks are like sticking up a gas station; they're a positive act where the attacker has initiative and cannot be prevented. The reality is that besides DoS, attacks require vulns!

screenshot OP kinda reminds me of grad school, wanting to do clever geometry processing CPU-side in the mid-late 2000s when everyone was just throwing GPU at the problems I liked "nihilistic depression" also reminds me of grad school, I had fun hobbies tho

🥶@eggmansasshole.bsky.social

The Internet is a fascinating place where everyone blames their own nihilistic depression and lack of fun hobbies on everyone else

"I wanted to do something novel and cool and video game-adjacent, and someone else just threw matrix multiplications at the problem until it surrendered" is hilariously on the nose

The thing to understand with writing is that being unnecessarily formal in an informal context is like wearing a three piece suit to a pool party

rain 🌦️@sunshowers.io

For example, ending the sentence with a period, while grammatically more formal (not more correct!), would have led to the sentence having a much worse feel

dishwashers. big ol' asterisk on the "labour saving" claim; replaces a fairly mindless, pleasantly bland chore; now you have a System to maintain; source of more arguments between my parents than anything else they'd show in front of me; great way to fuck up expensive cookware

But more to the point I think the ease with which that can be explained is an indictment of this kind of piece - which The Atlantic loves - staring in incomprehension at the easily comprehensible and then trying to make some broader cultural point about it. Instead of just talking to people.

today in Awkwardness Avoided, I was aware enough to rephrase the admonition "no-one wants to get Power Pegged" in a call to action for engineering teams to weed their feature flags nttawwt ofc

it took me quite a lot of economics learning to get there but at this point it kind of feels like all that effort was a waste (except that econ is fascinating). you don't need to know how it all works. that's the point of a vast impersonal market society. just relax. it's going to be fine.

oh fuck yeah I know what I'm doing when AI finally eats SRE

Similarly, women are better at detail oriented tasks like graduating from college or being doctors, but edpol forces them to date educated men. For this reason, colleges should offer useless male-coded vanity degrees, like math or CS, to create eligible bachelors to be future stay at home chefs.
