Had one last block to fill out on my ballot — school board — and ran into my neighbor with a school board candidate yard sign and asked her about it and now I'm ready to vote. Democracy!

And if, like me, you looked at your ballot and thought "soil and water conservation YAWN" well, trust me. That's where the action is.

Pro-Lula Brazilians doing en masse digital organizing against the platforms is interesting. Basically took website/influencer growth hacking techniques—eg everyone go like/comment/share this, get the algorithm to pick it up—and applied them to electoral politics at a grand scale. Thread:

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Hypothesis (which I need to verify with data): most saliant political misses for Kalshi & PolyMarket in 2025-6 tend to be the markets favoring right-wing candidates. Could the tight connection into right-wing information ecosystem bias biasing prices?

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

In between dodging CVEs and coming up random numbers other than “4” I missed the news that Facebook owes the state of New Mexico an entire year’s profit for doing the thing we’ve always known their entire business relies on. Forty-nine states to go! www.nytimes.com/2026/10/21/t...

So reminds me of @parismarx.com reporting on Musk and why he pushed the Hyperloop and Boring Co. tunnels - in part to throw cities off of developing better public transit options that make people not wanna buy cars or need to take taxis.

Like much else of what’s wrong today, X is a perfect example of elite failure and capitulation. The technical infrastructure was there to build alternatives over the past three years but the institutions refused to budge. They’ll be the first to act shocked when this all repeats itself again.

Louis Gray@louisgray.com

Is @gruber.foo right? It feels like a number of those who initially left X have gone back. Very unfortunate.

This is, unfortunately, a perfect example of what I mean by elite failure. It’s also why I think Obama will ultimately be remembered as a good, at times great, president who ultimately failed to be transformative in the way we needed.

He could’ve published that anywhere — NY Times op-ed, Harvard Law Review, barackobama.com — instead he decided on the website owned by the guy literally funding fascism around the world. To show for it, these are the top three replies that logged out X users, aka the majority of Americans, will see.

80% 14-day churn on Muse? Sounds like a mobile game to me @ryanhatesthis.bsky.social www.garbageday.email/p/is-meta-s-...

garbageday.emailIs Meta's Muse assistant actually popular?Read to the end for "I coulds get yooshed ta this" rat son or "cheesed to squeak you" mouse daughter

To be a bit more specific, I don’t think agentic usage is going to look like a social network or a video platform. I think churn and engagement will look more like a mobile game.

Somewhere away from "We'll just win elections and make the big platforms behave!" and "All that matters is winning so we should just use whatever platform gets us the most eyes!" there has to be a recognition that Meta/TikTok/YouTube/X are permanent thumbs on the scale until we crush them.

For a decade now, otherwise smart reporters, columnists, analysts have tied themselves into knots trying to will their way into a reasonable understanding of what, to the rest of us, has been an obvious fact: Donald Trump is a fucking moron who ruins everything he touches

Okay, minus any moderation additions, these should be fairly stable to implement by any client. Feel free to use api.gifdex.net, that should implement all these fairly well now Front end will be done soon, hopefully same with moderation bits and pieces

You can't build a better internet if no one participates. And, so the people loudly announcing they're going back to X, strike me the same way that scabs crossing the picket line do: the rest of us our out here holding the line to create a better world. And you're just deciding "fuck it, too hard."

Any normal, non-sociopath sees how obviously broken housing in SF but it’s exactly what the hippie gentry have always wanted. Their constant complaining about tech yuppies is just part of their cynical anti-politics to hold on to a little bit of power and ruin where they live.

Today I want to talk about my favorite dummymanders. In a dummymander, the geniuses behind the map have cut margins too close, and create vulnerabilities for themselves. tl;dr: pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. Here are four states that took it too far - and where you can make a difference.
