Hi, it’s me, your neighborhood robotics business guy, to inform you that if robots were actually ready to automate a process at scale, they would likely already be deployed

Chris Rugaber@chrisrugaber.bsky.social

Fascinating interview with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick on @cnbc.com this morning: He said that US manufacturers can use robots to offset the low wages paid in other countries, enabling the return of more production to the US, and Americans can get jobs building and maintaining the robots.

“How are you a socialist in an age of obvious abundance” is a pressing political question that was not resolved by union leaders and organizers in the 20th century

It's a great time to be a socialist if you can just recognize the pie is growing, we don't live in a zero-sum world, and that a lot of ideas that carried the day in the mid-20th century don't make sense now

Maybe but I hope he tries because it will leave the AIPAC rump of American Judaism completely politically homeless

Obama’s Cheesecake Factory decor joke is going to continue to get far more play in the media, days after it happened, than RFK Jr being openly racist. Draw your own conclusions about the press based on that.

The thing I like about this essay is summed up in the first screenshot. "Fighting for a fair share of growing consumption" is a strong mental model for answering a lot of open political questions. The thing I dislike about this essay is summed up in the second screenshot. What is the base need?

Meanwhile, "labor politics that is fighting for a fair share of growing consumption" gets you to interesting places that can synthesize the growing anger about corruption, inequality, inflation and prices, consumer sentiment, etc.

I think, if you take this essay to its logical conclusion, this represents a revolution in capability for the minority of folks who want a closer relationship with their computers and software For everyone else, a revolution in gooning

One of the benefits of hindsight is being able to see the critics of awful people vindicated by society over time, giving the lie to the "we can't judge them by modern standards" arguments in the process.

Christian Yelich singled home the first run of the game and William Contreras immediately followed up with an RBI single of his own. Brewers lead 2-0.

Sometimes I think about how it takes historians at least a few decades to settle the facts of some events because it takes that long for everyone invested in defending the relevant set of lies to die off

Andy Craig@andycraig.bsky.social

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

Flip side of “one day, everyone will have been against this” is “one day, everything bad about these people will be revealed canon and taught as the evil it is.”

Synthesizing this with a post I saw the other day about how we are still as a culture emerging from a history of humanity that legitimized child rape

Will Stancil@whstancil.bsky.social

It's like everyone decided "If the president was plausibly accused of child sex trafficking, it would be the biggest scandal of all time" and went from there to "It's not the biggest scandal of all time, so I guess he's not plausibly accused of child sex trafficking." But he is.

Has anyone formally looked at what the market-makers being risk-seeking degenerates does to the basic microeconomic foundations of prediction markets? If I’m not mistaken we need risk neutral participants to interpret the price as an aggregate probability in the first place.

The competence of the authoritarian side isn't usually analzyed because the paradigmatic cases feature talented political minds — Orban, Chavez, Modi, Netanyahu, and (early) Erdogan. The US case is exceptional. Trump is a savant at controlling the GOP but a total policy idiot.

This is the kind of cogent basketball analysis and political insider knowledge that makes Bluesky great

I don’t know about this. Obama doesn’t go to the hole anymore, so he’s pretty much relegated to the jumpshot. Meanwhile, Mamdani, an avid soccer player, has a quickness advantage and can keep Obama in front defensively. That said, I’ve seen Mamdani shoot and there’s no way Obama doesn’t win.

A major issue for theatre is that we lose parents for about a decade when they can't leave their kids alone to see a play. I have proposed on-site daycare options, more all ages productions, or anything to keep those people engaged. Babysitters don't exist so much as expensive sitting services.

I have a new theory called the Babysitting Theory that posits that plans with friends did not go away because of phones or COVID but because babysitters are no longer a common thing
